Product Description

The LUMIX TZ35--The Perfect Camera for any Situation

Wherever you are in the world, the LUMIX TZ35 – one of the world's slimmest 20x Optical Zoom digital compact cameras - is perfect for documenting any moment, no matter what your situation or surroundings. Packed into a simple, smart and sleek design, and available in a range of 4 different colours including black, white, silver and red, there's a LUMIX TZ35 to suit every preference.

16.1 Megapixel High Sensitivity MOS Sensor

Conventional Digital Cameras use image sensor technology built around a CCD (Charge Coupled Device). However the demand for faster readout and lower power consumption has led to the development of MOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) sensors as the preferred technology to deliver the advanced features of today's models. Panasonic's advanced 16 megapixel MOS sensor offers a digital readout from the sensor that supports Full HD video recording, high-speed burst shooting and a 3D mode. Also, due to a newly designed micro lens tube structure, light capture is maximised and picture noise greatly reduced.

High Resolution Leica Lens

Due to the strenuous image quality control checks that are enforced by Leica during Panasonic's lens manufacturing process, high quality and performance is assured in three main areas: Resolution - sharp and clear all the way to the edge and corners. Distortion - straight lines must appear straight, even at the wide angle. Ghost-free clarity - images should be largely free of ghosting or flare.

Panasonic TZ40
Enjoy a shooting range from 24 to 480mm.
Powerful 20x Optical Zoom Lens

One of the reasons the Lumix TZ series has proved so popular is the way in which Panasonic manage to cram an amazing high zoom lens in to a relatively small bodied camera. The 2013 TZ models include a powerful 20x optical zoom. That means that you could be shooting at a wide angle equivalent of 24mm one minute and then zooming in for a close up at 480mm the next.

40x Intelligent Zoom

The TZ models don't just offer a powerful optical zoom, they also includes a clever combination of optical and digital technology to get you even closer to your subject. The powerful image processing of the Venus engine means that a high quality image can be created from the telephoto lens that is equivalent to an incredible 40x magnification (twice the optical zoom limit).

24mm (Equivalent) Wide-angle Lens

The advantage of a wide angle lens, such as the 24mm equivalent included in this camera, is that you can get more subjects in the shot. That's great for indoor use where you may want to photograph a group of friends or for outdoor shots where you want to shoot an amazing landscape or sunset. Either way, you will find the wide angle option adds to your creativity.

Power O.I.S. with Active Mode for Video

Power O.I.S. is about twice as effective as our conventional system at reducing low-frequency vibration-caused blur. It is especially useful when using slow shutter effects or shooting night scenes. With the option of Active mode available during movie recording, videoing from a moving vehicle or while walking is also more precise.

Fastest Auto Focus - "Light-speed" AF

Fast focus is a must when you don't want to miss the moment of a lifetime. None come faster in a compact camera than the lightning fast 0.1 seconds of Lumix. Borrowed from the technology used in our Lumix G system camera, the incredibly fast focus speed is due to the double speed readout from the sensor when the shutter button is half pressed.

High Resolution 3.0 Inch (7.5cm) LCD with High Brightness Mode

A high resolution (460,000 pixels) Liquid Crystal Display is offered with a 3.0 inch viewing area that works well in bright light due to the Auto Brightness sensor that automatically increases brightness by up to 40% when in sunny conditions.

iA (Intelligent Auto) Shooting Mode

The art of taking interesting photographs is to have a camera that is ready to shoot when the moment arises. iA mode lets you take the picture without you having to worry about what settings to use. The camera intelligently works out the type of scene that you are trying to capture. Whether it is a picture of a person's face (using Auto Portrait mode), a dramatic landscape (using Auto Landscape mode), a close up of a beautiful flower (using Auto Macro mode) or a group of friends (using Auto Face Detection). All the most commonly used shooting scenarios are programmed in to the camera and the camera makes all the internal settings automatically, leaving you to just press the button.

Full Manual (PASM) Control Options

Manual setting of things like aperture or shutter speed are normally reserved for Digital SLR style cameras, so having such creative control on a compact camera is a real advantage and a valuable asset. Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual mode or Programme mode are all available so that you can test, and grow your creative skills without having to step up to a more professional model.

Panasonic TZ40
Capture high speed action with a rapid sequence of still pictures.
10 Frames per Second High Speed Burst Shooting

High-speed burst shooting, up to 10 frames per second at full resolution, is possible. This enables you to capture high speed action with a sequence of still pictures that are sharp and defined, even when it is difficult to keep the subject in the centre of the frame. You can review the images after you have captured the action and choose the best composed shot.

Panasonic TZ40
Add creative effects to your panorama shooting.
Creative Panorama Shooting Mode with Filter Effects

The Ultra-wide shooting panorama mode not only allows you to capture vast landscapes in one complete picture, but in a Panasonic first, this camera also offers "Creative Panorama" mode which allows you to choose from up to 12 filter effects** that can be applied to your shot.

Multiple Scene Setting Auto Shooting Modes

Up to 18 pre-programmed scene modes can be offered (number varies depending on model) giving you the choice of a wide range of shooting scenarios. Just select the one that best describes the scene you are taking, and the camera makes the best settings automatically.

3D Photo Shooting Mode

3D still pictures can look amazing when viewed on the latest 3D televisions. Normally two lenses or two cameras are required to create the left and right eye image that makes up a 3D picture. However, using the clever processing of the new Venus engine and the high-speed MOS sensor, a 3D stereoscopic image can be created with just one lens. Just select "3D Photo" mode and position yourself in front of your subject (the subject must not be moving for the 3D to be effective). Next press the shutter button whilst panning the camera about 10cm to the right. The camera will shoot about 20 shots and out of those shots it will choose two images that are the correct distance apart to create a 3D image when viewed on a 3D TV.

Panasonic TZ40
High quality video recording to suit the latest Full HD TVs.
FULL HD Video Mode with AVCHD Recording

When shooting video for playback on a Full HD TV, AVCHD offers amazing high quality recording. Video captured on your camera's SD card can be played back directly on a Panasonic Viera Full HD TV by putting the card in the SD slot on the TV and selecting play video.

MP4 Full HD Video Recording Mode for High Compatibility

Also offered in movie record mode is MP4 (H.264) format recording. High Definition video including 1920x1080 can be shot at 25 Progressive frames per second. MP4 format is compatible with many video editing software packages, but is also compatible with iTunes for playback on Smartphone or tablet devices.

Optical Zoom in Video Mode

Many Digital Still Cameras offer video mode these days, but most do not support zooming during video recording. Panasonic do include the zoom function on this Lumix model, so you can now shoot video just like you can with a camcorder.

* Requires "Panasonic Image App” for iOS / Android smartphones.

** Number of effects varies according to model.

Even though there have been newer versions released since the TZ35, I do feel that given the price, this camera is still great workhorse producing some stunning images. Keep in mind that newer does not necessarily mean better, especially when enhancements made are the inclusion of Wi-Fi, GPS or better frames per second.
Amazon will tell you that there is a newer version of this model (TZ55) when viewing the product page. However unlike the TZ35, the TZ55 does not sport a Leica lens. (A deal breaker for me).
-------------------------------------
Short camera review:

The camera comes bundled with a USB cable, lanyard, a very basic "User Manual", a CD and a DMW-BCG10E battery. Unfortunately no separate charger is included, so unless you have a compatible one, charging is done via the camera itself.

You will need to provide your own SD card. This camera takes SD,SDHC and SDXC cards.

The TZ35 produces well exposed, vibrant and crispy colourful images. It will also do HD video in AVHD and MP4 format. The power optical image stabilisation works a treat in minimizing blur caused by camera shake. The rich featurelist means that you can get very creative. It sports 14 different artistic settings in the "Creative Control" mode. A few of these are HDR, Sepia, B&W, Toy Camera, Miniature Effect, and my favourite.. One Point Colour. This will let you chose a specific colour and the rest will be in B&W. A host of Panorama modes come in quite handy for shooting those sweeping panoramas. Other modes are: Scenery Mode, Program Mode, Custom Mode, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter Priority Mode, Manual Exposure Mode.

Key Features
○ LEICA DC lens with 20x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 24-480mm) extendible to 40X

I absolutely LOVE these Lumix cameras - this is the second one I have owned (had the other one for over 6 years) but have tried a few other people's too. They are small, sturdy and take superb pictures.

I love the fact that they go to 24mm wide angle as I often take photos of landscapes and architecture and often want to get back further than a standard 35mm lens. But with these little beauties and their 20x zooms they also go in tight when taking pics from afar (I take a few snaps of garden birds - particularly as we have had gold finches feeding in the garden). The Leica lens is a big hit as you'd expect from them - with really crisp pictures every time.

The picture quality in daylight is so good that I rarely take my Digital SLR out with me these days - as these little cameras are just so much more portable. Also I took it along to a Stranglers concert a few night's ago and thought I would try out the video setting and the footage is absolutely marvellous for a camera this size.

There are so many settings - including my faves of panoramic, soft focus, sepia which save you from doing special effects with software outside the camera. The programmable/automatic/manual settings also are extremely numerous.

Can I fault it at all? Erm... I honestly can't think of anything at the moment. Perhaps it uses more plastic and less metal than my old TZ6 - but that just makes it lighter and I haven't felt that it was any less of a camera because of it. Oh yes - a couple of the buttons on the top plate are a little small - the video start/stop and the main on/off button.

This is a brilliant camera - excellent image quality, handles beautifully, enough features and options to satisfy just about anyone.

I love photography and my 'real' camera is a Canon EOS with 'L' series lenses. However, for walking/backpacking I need a small "point and shoot" which fits easily into a pocket and doesn't weigh much. A year ago I bought a Panasonic Lumix TZ25 which was an excellent bit of kit, until the focussing motors failed after 7 months. Amazon were brilliant and replaced it.

Three months later the replacement TZ25 developed the same fault.

I've been taking pictures for over 40 years and have ~never~ broken or damaged a camera. Both TZ25's lived in a hard case when not in use. They were not subjected to extremes of heat or cold. They did not got wet. They have not been dropped.

Amazon continued to be brilliant. They could not replace the second TZ25 with the same model because it wasn't available. They did, however, allow me to trade up to a later model, the TZ35. That was on 16th April. Today the TZ35 started to develop the same fault - the lens cover no longer closes properly and experience sadly tells me that this is the start of the motors failing and it won't be long before I can't take any pictures with it.

I'll reiterate what I said at the start, this is a fabulous little camera - great pictures, handles beautifully, but the build quality is unacceptable.

Thankfully Amazon have second to none customer service and have authorised a refund. Google searches lead me to believe that this is not an isolated incident and that Panasonic have a quality control problem which they are not fixing. I was paranoid with the TZ35 - it didn't spend a second out of the hard case when not in use; I know I have not damaged it.

I'll now be spending far more time that I want researching a non-Panasonic alternative :{
