These are non-negotiable DECT phone requirements for me:

1. 2.5mm Headset Socket

2. Clear, Loud Ear-Piece Sound

3. Answerphone Facility

1. Headset Socket

The number of DECT phones with a 2.5mm headset socket is surprisingly small compared with the enormous quantity of cordless phones on the market (thus, the cheaper KX-TG7122E twin set was not an option). The sound via my Plantronics headset is clear and loud enough when on full volume, and the person on the other end can hear me perfectly clearly. (This was not the case on our Philips Zenia DECTs which were horribly quiet for microphone and speaker, especially when using the same Plantronics headset.)

2. Ear-Piece Volume & Sound Quality

We returned our Motorola 4067 answerphone twin set for a refund because of a pronounced hissing sound and dreadful build quality (flimsy, badly laid out buttons, etc.). By contrast, these Panasonics have a good, clear sound in the handset ear-piece making full volume too loud! There is even a `Voice Enhancer' feature offering the option for `High Tone' or `Low Tone' (or `Off'): thus, sound quality and volume in the ear-piece are excellent.

3. Answerphone

It works perfectly - straight out of the box with no setting-up at all. Play back messages by just hitting one button and the voice is loud and clear over the base station or handset speaker-phone.

It may be justifiable to gripe about the price, which is enormous, if only because there are features which may be never used (like SMS, if you don't subscribe) or which are just a bit gimmicky (like the colour screen). Still, if you want a headset socket, you've just got to pay for the unnecessary extras. The only other gripe I have is that there is no belt clip with these phones. This is very annoying given the cost - and Panasonic become almost offensive when they offer a belt clip as an optional extra!

Still, reviews clearly indicate that Panasonic make the best quality DECT telephones available and the KX-TG81xx range is the pick of the crop. Cost (and the lack of belt clip) may deduct half a star, but these phones are still top dog.

Very good but.... 8 Feb 2007
By Lanius
This is essentially a wonderful product, let down only slightly by a few disappointments.

The best thing is the sound quality. As a normal handset this is way better than any DECT 'phone (Philips, BT) I have owned before, and the speakerphone feature is exceptional, too. It's also nicely made, in a way that makes it a real pleasure to use, and I expect it will probably last a good few years.

Now for the bad points:

Each 'phonebook entry consists of number, name and category. The category is useful because it can search the 'phonebook by category. But when you transfer the 'phonebook to another handset it copies ony the numbers and names, not the categories. So you have to go through them all to reassign the categories. If I had known this before I had punched in all my numbers I would not have bothered using categories at all (I have 4 handsets).

The display backlight stays on (not at the brightest, thank goodness) when on the charger. Just about every other feature is programmable, but the darned backlight has to be on when stood on the charger. When off the charger, it times out to darkness (to conserve battery power). So if you have one in the bedroom and have outgrown nightlights, you will find yourself taking the handset off the charger as you go to bed, and replacing it in the morning. Even the low backlight setting is way brighter than your average clock radio, for instance, and it will annoy some people.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment is that the support available from Panasonic is dismal. The support team are equipped with answers to a limited set of questions, and whatever reasonable question you ask, you just get the answer to one of the standard questions. Sadly this sort of problem isn't confined to Panasonic, increasingly it's normal. Maybe it's a measure of the respect I had for Panasonic that I expected better of them.

Also it is not fully compatible with the Plantronics C65 handset. Older Panasonic models are, so it's probably Panasonic that messed up here. See my review of the Plantronics C65 handset for more details, if you want to use a DECT cordless headset.

But contrary to the first report posted here, batteries for each handset are included. The excellent packaging has a map of where everything is, so it's clear there should be batteries, and there are. And they are a nice standard size (AAA NiMH) so you will easily find replacements when the time comes.

Feature Packed Phones 15 July 2006
I've only had these phones a short time but am very impressed with the quality.

Features worthy of special note include:-

- crystal clear speaker phone for hands free operation

- very useful night mode (caller display required) which

allows you to receive calls only from designated numbers

during certain hours (especially good for those who work

shifts)

- easy operation of all the features although you may need to

read the instructions initially in order to make the most of

the phones many features

- excellent display and illuminated keypad that can easily be

used in total darkness it's so bright, when not in use the

keypad illumination turns off and the screen switches off

if not in the charger/base unit.

Overall a well designed quality phone that shouldn't disappoint anybody - and quality Ni-MH batteries are included (as stated in the operating instructions "included accessories").
