I purchased this camera within the last few days from Currys, who have a special offer on it at moment making Amazon look overpriced. A bit on the small side for my podgy hands, this camera is nevertheless a nice piece of kit. I am very impressed with the quality of video in good light. Sharp and clear up to the limit of it's 5X optical zoom. Quality does not appear to deteriorate at all with the digital zoom engaged but I found hard to keep a steady hand held picture at the 12X limit. The camera is very light and in my opinion would be better if it had a bit more weight. Why manufacturers make a virtue out of cameras being light in weight defeats me. It is much easier to hold a camera steady if it has a bit of weight to it.
Still photographs are passable to good but I don't think they compare favourably with those taken with a 6-8 megapixel camera equipped with a decent lens and image sensor. That being said, don't be put off. If you are out and about and want a pocket-able device to record your day, this camera will fill the bill very well.
One slightly misleading point in advertising is that you can take stills while shooting video. You can, but only at 0.3, 0.9 or 2.0 megapixels according to how you have the camera set up for video. To get good quality photos you must shoot in photo mode.
I am pleased to say the camera comes with a decent handbook of around A6 size. It covers everything, and would be easy to carry around with you should you need it. As regards importing pictures and video into your computer, it's a doddle. I take out the SD card and download the files via a card reader. From there they import easily into my video editor, Corel Video Studio. The handbook says the files play through Quicktime but I find they open just as easily in Windows Media Player so long as you have the MP4 codecs. I have yet to explore the bundled software and probably won't bother as I already have all I need for editing. My operating system is Windows 7.
The battery is lithium ion and remains in the camera while you charge it. I would have preferred to take the battery out for charging so a second can be inserted but you can't have everything. The handbook says the battery is good for 35-40 minutes in normal use. Slightly higher capacity would have been good.
All in all a couple of niggles but a very pleasing purchase notwithstanding.
Update: I have been out and about with the camera today and take back all I said about the still pictures being only equivalent to 6-8 megapixels. A set of pictures taken in good light of open townscapes were superb so no complaints about performance at all.
I found the battery level disappears very quickly. The hand book says it will last about 30-35 minutes under normal shooting conditions and I would not dispute that. Not really long enough for shooting video when you are looking for sequences that will hang together nicely. Must buy a spare battery or maybe two.
