4.0 out of 5 stars Great price, great size 15 Oct 2011
    Colour Name:Black
Just bought this product after spending quite some time researching into compact camcorders. For the price, this is definitely the best on the market. Although many people think its all about the FLIP ultra, it really isn't. In comparison, the FLIP is very basic and very bulky. This is about the same size as a smartphone, slightly heavier, it has a night mode, which is a massive bonus - it automatically detects a dark situation and prompts you to use the flash type thing! You can also take photos with it, should you so wish.

The tripod is very handy, as you might want a self portrait of some sort. Also, there is a USB extension cable so you're not actually plugging the USB contained on the camera straight into the PC, which is what you have to do with the FLIP, and that made it feel like the weight of the camera was going to break the USB off at some points.

It's very easy to download, plug and play. There is some kind of software that comes with it, but if you're used to using memory sticks and external hard drives, you could treat this the same for ease of use. Of course, if you wish to edit photos and film etc, it is worth using the software.

finally, the memory itself is small, so would strongly suggest you purchase a memory card - and I would recommend SDHC at least 8GB for good quality as well as amount you can record.

5.0 out of 5 stars really great camcorder 20 Sep 2011

Panasonic HM-TA2 HD Mobile Camera - Black (8MP Stills) 3-inch Touchscreen (Tripod Included) I purchused this camcorder just in time for my family holiday. It was very easy to get started, (don't forget to buy an SDHC memory card- I got a 16GB one which I think is quite adequate). It's quite easy to use, just start and point! Easy to carry, fits in your pocket like a mobile phone. Picture quality was very good in bright light, and it has a nifty LED light for night time. Sound quality exelent. Has easy to follow editing features. Connects to PC via a retractable USB terminal, (BUT DID NOT COME WITH THE USB EXTENSION CORD AS STATED IN THE MANUAL--WAS QUITE ANNOYED WITH THIS). Also you have to purchase an HDMI mini cable if you want to connect to your TV, and a charger if you want to charge it with the mains. All in all though I loved it and have no regrets at all in buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Panasonic HM-TA2 HD pocket camcorder 30 Dec 2011

    Colour Name:Violet
Picture good when played back on tv. Would be good if it had an image stabiliser.
    Very easy to use.
Was expecting the viewing area to be bigger - it is only about half of the screen.
Watch out for cost of extras if you don't already have them; eg cable between camcorder to HDTV (RRP AU$59); cable to recharge battery (instead of using pc to recharge)(RRP AU$19); SDHC 16GB class6 card (RRP AU$79) - all would be cheaper on amazon of course.
    Haven't tested still photos yet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Item did not switch on after charging up 7 Jan 2012
    Colour Name:Violet|Verified Purchase
Unfortunately after charging up the first camera I was sent it did not turn on and had to be returned to Amazon. The customer service at Amazon was first class. I contacted them at 9pm on a Thursday and the replacement item was with me on the Saturday following. The second camera has been charged up and turned on - no problems. Now to get down to learning what it can do.
Tried it out and found it works ok and is easy to use. The zoom function takes a little getting used to in order to get a smooth zoom. The microphone is very good so be careful what you say whilst videoing! Still photos are what you would expect from a camera of this size. All in all it does what it says on the packet (provided it turns on firstly!) Update to review (01.04.2012) - I have been using this device at equestrian events and found that it can be fuzzy as mentioned by another reviewer especially when the subject is some distance from you. I have found that my digital camera is easier to hold steady and better at focusing when used as a movie camera. Maybe my skill will improve. The still photos are ok but I do already have a camera! This is not a good buy - it has been on charge now for 24 hours and is still indicating that it is charging! Would not recommend it - buy a camera that has a video facility instead you would be better off!

    5.0 out of 5 stars Panasonic HM-TA2 Review 20 July 2012
    Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
    Panasonic HM-TA2 Review

Tested with SanDisk Extreme HD video 30MB/s. SDHC-I (not supplied).

    Video:

H264-MPEG4 AVC (Part 10)(AVC1) (Planar 4:2:0 YUV Full Scale) with AAC MP4A audio.

    4 modes:

    1080-1920 30fps (progressive) - 1 minute = 97mb. Better quality than 720p.

    720p-1280 30fps (progressive) - 1 minute = 74mb. Good quality overall.

    540-960 30fps (iFrame) - 1 minute = 167mb. Fair quality with large file size.

    480-640 30fps (progressive) - 1 minute = 26mb. Low quality.

    Audio:

    4 Modes:

    PCM S16 LE - 16bit depth at 48Khz stereo.

    AAC MP4A - 256 kbps at 48KHz stereo.

    AAC MP4A - 128 kbps at 48Khz stereo.

AAC MP4A - 128 kbps at 48Khz (low gain) stereo.

The sound quality in all modes was very good. Lower quality settings had a metallic ringing to them and lost definition, but were still perfectly acceptable. The best option was the AAC 256kbps as it benefits from the compression the PCM mode lacks.

    Photographs:

    3264 by 2448 (8M) (4:3)

    1920 by 1080 (2M) (16:9)

    1600 by 1200 (2M) (4:3)

    640 by 480 (0.3M) (4:3)

All modes were satisfactory. The best being 3264 by 2448 on account of its high resolution.

    Summary

Excellent sound quality in voice recorder mode and video mode. Very functional and easy to use. Simple menu system that is easy to read and use via large touch-screen. Includes a useful built in LED light that can be activated while recording if needed. Camera appears to have a mechanical focusing mechanism and electronic face recognition. Battery is built in and will charge when plugged into a PC. USB interconnect cable supplied.
