DMW-VF1 external viewfinder,
By
This review is from: Panasonic DMW-VF1E - Optical Viewfinder for Lumix LX5 and LX3 (Electronics)
I bought this item knowing its limitations. The upper surface of the body is clearly marked 24mm, i.e. exactly what it is and ideal for a fixed focus camera of that spec. The virtual image seen through the finder is only true with camera zoom set to 24mm [wide-angle] and any other zoom adjustment of the camera will progressively crop the image to be recorded. The absent-minded, including me are likely to record headless brides and the like. So, ex-35mm-reflex users beware. Otherwise the 'bright-line' finder is very well engineered and a useful alternative to framing [at 24mm equiv] via the LCD, especially in bright sunlight.

Optical viewfinder,
This review is from: Panasonic DMW-VF1E - Optical Viewfinder for Lumix LX5 and LX3 (Electronics)
After two years use I find this optical viewfinder so useful I now leave it permanently in place. It is true parallax considerations must be allowed for (as with a rangefinder film camera)but the difference between having a sharp and bright view in sunlight and no view at all is worth the not inconsiderable money I paid for it.

Useful for Ricoh GRD-IV,
This review is from: Panasonic DMW-VF1E - Optical Viewfinder for Lumix LX5 and LX3 (Electronics)
After using it as a fixture on my LX-3, this was being used less on my LX-5 as the evf is more useful. It has found a new use on a Ricoh GRD-IV as the safety margin on the 24mm frame places it nearly at 100% view for the 28mm GRD. Clearly any misalignment due to manufacturing tolerances could be a problem, but for mine it is accurate and provides a new lease of life for an expensive bit of kit.
