If you buy something on Amazon, it's always the genuine article, right?

Wrong!

I'm not talking about replacement compatible batteries here, but about those advertised, like this one, as a genuine Panasonic battery.

Despite Amazon's Anti-Counterfeiting Policy, a rogue trader could still send you a battery that looks like the real deal - same packaging, same information leaflet in half a dozen languages, same size and shape, and which, at first, even seems to work as it should - but which is not genuine.

If you already have a Panasonic battery that came with your camera or camcorder, be sure to compare it very carefully against the one you've just bought. Is the printing on the battery in the same colour ink? Are the font, character spacing and line spacing of all the lettering on the battery exactly the same as your original? Does it have a serial number engraved on the casing? Is the printed brand name identical - in every way? Does it weigh exactly the same? If not, the battery's probably a fake.

How do I know this? Well, batteries are expensive so I thought I'd save myself a few pounds by ordering one of those costing £20(ish) from a Marketplace Seller here on Amazon. (Incidentally, the Marketplace Seller concerned has since withdrawn this particular battery from sale and, while continuing to sell other Panasonic-branded batteries, is no longer listed against this product.)

On receipt of the battery, I compared it to other DMW-BLC12E batteries that had come with my cameras and the spares I'd bought from authorised Panasonic dealers. To my surprise, all the things mentioned above - ink colour, brand name, font size..., the lot - were different. The differences were subtle in some cases, but different they definitely were.

I didn't receive genuine Panasonic battery, but a knock off. It doesn't look like the picture on the website. There is no Panasonic branding anywhere on the battery I received. Funnily enough, the box looks genuine, i.e. there is Panasonic label on it.

It was bought straight from Amazon.

I'm not happy about it. I'm trying to return it.

Does exactly what it should. Works in my Lumix camera. Shame the genuine item is so pricey. But at least it works properly (unlike some of the the cheaper alternatives that don't display their charge status).

Having just purchased a new Lumix G5 camera I wanted a spare battery as part of my backup package. What can you say about a battery other than it does the job and provides me with confidence when I am out and about.

This battery arrived in the time the supplier stipulated. However I wonder if Lumix have changed their battery maker or the way that they make them? The batteries on my previous Lumix lasted almost twice as long as this one.

Strangely enough this is where Panasonic wants to earn it's money. If it weren't for the built in chip that makes buying aftermarket batteries a gamble I would never buy this battery.

OK it a Panasonic battery for Panasonic camera of course it works fine but just cost 7 times more than generic ones which will work OK but no battery level so take your pick. I understand Panasonic do their best to restrict non-own brand battery use, and who wants to risk their new expensive camera. My wallet hurts but this was the best price on the net for the real thing!
