Pause and rewind live TV

The Blu-ray recorder's DIGA system is the new simple and convenient way of pausing and rewinding live TV. With the ability to rewind up to 2 hours, you'll never miss a thing. You can pause live TV as though you were watching a DVD.

HD Recording

Record with no loss of quality

With the Blu-ray recorder's DR mode, you can record HD content and broadcasts direct to the HDD without the slightest change in quality. You get the same unforgettable picture, the same crisp 5.1ch surround sound and the same subtitles and audio description. It's full High Definition in all its glory - just as it was intended and yours to view whenever you like.

Fast HD conversion

We want your HD recording world to be as flexible as possible so we offer a range of High Speed Copy Modes to make the handling of your HD content easier.

Panasonic's original H.264 Encoder provides a convenient and space-saving compression format that saves valuable space on your Blu-ray recorder Hard Disc and allows a number of programs to be saved to a single Blu-ray Disc. In addition, the Encoder ensures superb picture clarity in both slow and fast motion playback.

Viewing and recording has never been easier with Panasonic's simple DIGA system.

High-speed copying

Copying content from the HDD to disc is not only simple; it can be done at incredibly high speeds. Your family movies and photos can be archived in full HD to a Blu-ray disc, or simply copied to a DVD so you can share them with all your friends and family. Either way, it takes very little time - one hour of full HD content can be archived to Blu-ray Disc in just one minute (HM Mode).

Stunning Playback

Blu-ray Discs allow you to watch your favourite movies and moments in stunning high definition. And the Panasonic range of Blu-ray Recorders ensures that you can experience all the crisp detail, rich colour and unforgettable sound in the way they were originally intended.

That's because Panasonic Blu-ray Recorders use high quality image technology that precisely processes every single pixel. They also incorporate 1080/24p playback, meaning images from a Blu-ray Disc are reproduced in their original form, with no need for conversion.

Our powerful processor Uniphier Chip that has seen Panasonic win many awards; offers the best picture performance for Blu-ray movies and for HD recordings.

PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus is a high quality image-processing technology developed by Panasonic to precisely process each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc™ video signal in the vertical direction. It reproduces colour data with twice the accuracy of conventional systems to keep colours faithful and sharp.

Because each pixel is processed, you get High Definition pictures that remain sharp even when the action heats up.

Eco Friendly Power Features

Intelligent Auto Standby means that when you're finished watching a film on your Blu-ray recorder, you can simply press "TV" and the recorder will automatically revert to standby mode.

Furthermore, recorders with the Power Save function will automatically turn on and off at the same time as your TV, ensuring that it never uses power unnecessarily.

HD Network Hub

Store photos and videos in High Definition

This Blu-ray recorder makes it easy to store and manage all your favourite HD content in one convenient place. Finally, a simple way to really enjoy and save HD home movies from a camcorder without a PC. Shoot your HD movie and transfer direct to Blu-ray in full High Definition, or transfer to the hard disc, edit, and then save to Blu-ray Disc. This player is also great for transferring HD images. Or, if you want to share with all your friends and family, why not save them in standard definition to DVD so everyone can enjoy?

Record, edit and share your home movies and photographs via the HDD.

DLNA networking

The DLNA Network Technology transforms your BD recorder into a true home hub. Simply connect to your wireless home network (LAN) and you can send AVCHD, JPEG files and recorded TV programmes to your DLNA capable VIERA TV, Blu-ray player, PC, and other devices on your existing network.

Internet TV

Stay connected with VIERA CAST and BD Live

With VIERA CAST we've broken down the barriers between TV and the internet. It allows you to access live web content including YouTube and Picasa, where you can access those shared videos and pictures live on your TV screen.

And with BD Live, you can connect to the Internet and play Blu-ray movies that have Internet-enabled content, such as interactive multiplayer games, trailers and extra features you can download from the Internet to local storage, e.g. on exchangeable memory like an SD memory card. The technology gets you the most from your movie watching. In the near future BD-Live will enable users to join in quizzes and challenge each other in super interactive games.

A very good buy 27 Feb 2011
Having had this for a little over a week, and tried to do most things with it, I am well pleased. It produces a superb quality from HD programmes - my TV is only 32" but even with that size the difference in quality between HD and SD is very apparent - not just the extra definition but a richer colour.

Recording programmes on the hard drive is easy. The EPG is well laid out, as is the list of recorded programmes and the tabbed filter system that lets you select from what you've recorded by genre or seen/unseen is very useful. Editing programmes and copying them to a DVD or blu-ray disc is easy, as are other editing functions - adding chapters, changing titles etc.

A table in the manual specifies the various recording modes, including how much recording time each mode gives, for saving programmes onto a blank disc. What it doesn't say is that if you record high definition material in the native DR mode (which copies at high speed because it has no format conversion to do) you won't be able to play it back on any other blu-ray player. To do that you need to use one of the other HD formats. After much experimenting I'll be using HE, which gives 9 hours on a single-layer blu-ray disc without showing any deterioration in quality. More compression = more disc capacity but compression artefacts begin to become visible with HL and HM. Experiment with a re-recordable blu-ray disc and make your own choice.

Connecting it to the internet gives you a very good full screen interface to the BBC iPlayer, but little else of interest. Youtube is there but it only fills half the screen and apart from Twitter, there is little else of interest. Most of the spaces where feeds should go are unoccupied so hopefully more will follow but at present compared with the internet feeds in WD's Media Player it is very sparse.

Downsides:
1. As others have remarked, it's slow moving between modes, presenting a blank screen for a couple of seconds. Coming from a Humax, which was instant, this was annoying but you get used to it.
2. It's not multi-region but it can be converted (see my note in the discussion forum)
3. The menus can be confusing and the manual that comes with it is just a little too terse to help much. For example, it took me ages to get 4:3 ("fullscreen") programmes recorded on bought DVD's to play at their proper screen ratio - eventually I found it under Others/Setup/Connection. Connection? Who would have guessed that?
4. The font size for the track listing for CD's you copy to the HDD is way too big. As a great lover of classical music many of my CD's have track titles such as "Dvorak: Slavonic dances op. 36: no. 1 (Presto)" but the large font means that you don't get to see which number dance it is because it's run out of space. Also, if you run a slide show while you listen to your music you can't pause the audio.

Despite these problems I would still recommend this recorder most highly, particularly if you intend to archive programmes on blu-ray discs. Having everything all in one box and completely integrated makes it so much slicker. If you only want to time shift, then save half the price and get the Humax.

I reviewed this after a week's use and gave it 4 stars. Now, after several more weeks I raise my score to 5. Once you really understand it (by trial and error - the manual remains as opaque) you realise just how good it really is.

I've been using a Samsung DVD Recorder, so was familiar with the basic idea, but didn't previously have the luxury of an HDD. Now I record everything onto the hard drive and edit it before transferring to a disc. In this way I can get the precise beginning and endings of programmes (no 'and now on BBC...'). No adverts either. Great! The set up is easy for labelling both discs and individual titles, and anyway series titles come automatically, inviting you to change them if you want to. The 'against' part is that transferring a programme to DVD generally has to be in real time, which can be tiresome. I've only just purchased some blank Blu Ray discs, including one RE (the equivalent, I think, of RWs) to practice on. I transferred one 25 minutes programme and found that it took only a few minutes, and had the subtitles etc exactly as broadcast. I was unclear, however, whether or not it was actually in true HD - there doesn't seem to be anything to tell you what's what. And according to the machine there was only just over 3 hours left on the disc, whereas my understanding is that there should be many more hours than that. If not, the discs are too expensive to use, and I might as well continue to use only DVDs. I'm still learning though and there's quite a bit to work out. I don't, for instance, understand the benefits, or not, of the different formats on the HHD (DR, HG, HM etc) or what all that means, and nowhere is that explained. And that's not just me - the tech guys at Currys didn't know either, so I really think Panasonic could give us another couple of pages in their otherwise straightforward, paper, manual to explain some of this. I've also transferred some old VHS recordings with very good results. I don't have a video or digital camera. It plays CDs, and is able to identify some pretty obscure tracks. The picture is great, even on our 22inch screen, and I can record two programmes at the same time (and I can alter the input of the TV and use the built-in Freeview to watch a third). And Freesat delivers everything on BBC1HD and ITV1HD plus a selection on BBCHD, which just about covers everything we want. Expensive machine, bought after much soul-searching, but my wife and I both feel we did the right thing.

I have had this machine since late 2010. This is the second review I have submitted, the previous one just seemed to get lost. The main aim of buying this machine was to reduce the number of boxes under the TV to one. That was a success, but for the £[] plus that I paid, I would have expected better. It isn't that it doesn't do what you expect, it is more the way it does it. It is very slow and clunky. Compared to my Humax HDR it is a cart horse opposed to a race horse. If you set a programme reminder, it lets you know but will never automatically change to the new station the reminder is set for. If you are watching a recording you have made and want to read the synopsis of that programme you can't unless you stop the recording. These are just two examples of some of the irritations of this machine, there are others. Basically many of the menus and procedures are quite long winded and counter intuative compared with my good old Humax. Basically it is far too much money for a machine that really needs more development. But at least it is only one box under the tele?
