Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Advanced 2D image technology accumulated over the years at the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory (PHL) has also been applied to 3D image playback, allowing high-quality images to approach original film quality. Lifelike 3D images with dramatic leaping effects and enhanced depth, lustre and texture are beautifully reproduced.

PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus is a high quality image-processing technology developed to precisely process each pixel of the Blu-ray DiscTM video signal in the vertical direction. It reproduces colour data more faithfully than the conventional system.

With the new P4HD enhanced Full HD upsampling, the standard definition movies in DVD also approaches Full HD quality. The picture is intelligently analyzed to have the best matching process done on each pixels.

The boot time from standby to power-on has been greatly reduced from prior models. With this improvement, movies can now be enjoyed with less stress by less waiting time. * Your TV Set must be ‘ON’. Ready in 0.5 sec from Power Off (with Quick Start Mode).

With optional wireless LAN adaptor (DY-WL10) plugged into the USB terminal, VIERA CAST can be enjoyed wirelessly by accessing to your Wireless LAN router. You can access YouTubeTM Videos and other Internet sites from the special VIERA CAST Home screen.

The first thing that I should say is that I have only used this player as a 2D player, so if you are looking for a summary of its 3D capabilities I am afraid this review will not be helpful. I should also say that the reason I thought so long and hard about which player to buy is that it has replaced a Pioneer DVD player which had an excellent picture and the last thing I wanted was to be disappointed at the quality of standard definition (SD) playback on the blu ray (BD) player.

The main reason that I bought the BDT100 was that I wanted to focus on picture quality for both SD and BD disks. The fact that it has 3D capabilities is even better, as it helps future proof the player in case I upgrade my TV in the future. The picture quality of the BDT100 for both SD and BD is absolutely outstanding. The upscaling logarithm that the BDT100 uses for SD disks is excellent, so that the picture quality for SD disks is very close to blu-ray quality. Blu-ray playback is flawless and looks superb.

The rival Sony and Samsungs have excellent BD capability, but I have been less convinced by their SD playback, which is what finally swayed me towards the Panasonic and I am delighted with that decision.

One thing I would point out, just in case you have a fancy surround sound system, the BDT100 has only one HDMI output. If this leads to the TV, then you cannot connect HDMI to your sound system. This is not a problem for me as I use a bog standard 2 speaker mini system to boost the sound, but it is something to consider (the higher spec but more expensive BDT300 has two HDMI outputs). The other thing is that the BDT100 is not wireless out of the box - you need a dongle (£80) to do this. This was not a problem for me; I just moved my router to behind the TV and connected the DT100 via a standard Ethernet cable.

The remote control is excellent and easy to use - there is a volume setting for your TV, which can be programmed according to the make of your TV, and this worked fine. I have a decent Philips ambilight TV. My stereo system is Technics and the remote also controls that which is an unexpected bonus (more luck than judgment).

The only thing that has underwhelmed me is the VieraCast service - this has a very limited range of features (YouTube, Bloomberg, weather) at the moment. No sign of iPlayer or Lovefilm, which the rival Sony does have. I am hoping that VieraCast will improve in the future - even if it does not, this is not the end of the world to me as it is SD and BD disk playing that I am most interested in. However, if streaming options are a high priority for you, I would look at the Sony S570 instead.

Overall, the BDT100 is an excellent player if you can live without the bells and whistles above - if you want a player with the best SD and BD quality playback, then this is probably one of the very best and i would award it 4.5 stars (minus half a star for the poor VieraCast service).
