Product Description

Product Description

The DMP-BD30 from Panasonic renders images that are so real you?ll feel like they're jumping out from the screen at you! The DMP-BD30 comes with an HDMI socket for smoother, finer-quality graphics, so you can watch films the way they were meant to be seen. The DMP-BD30 is also compatible with a number of different supports such as DVD-R and dual-layer discs, and even has a removable front panel, revealing a slot for SD and SDHC cards that allows you to enjoy digital images directly on your TV or share photos with others around you.

Manufacturer's Description

The DMP-BD30 is the next generation High Definition 1080p Blu-ray Disc player. It is the first Blu-ray player to be introduced with Final Standard Profile, which adds a variety of new and enhanced features to the Blu-ray arena and one that separates the Panasonic Blu-ray player from the rest of the field. Also unique to the DMP-BD30 is the inclusion of an SD Memory Card slot for playback of High Definition content recorded in the AVCHD format. The SD slot also allows for viewing of digital still images recorded to an SD Memory Card.Final Standard Profile is an advanced function added to the Blu-ray standard, which opens the door to new functions such as Picture-in-Picture (which displays a second image in a sub window) and Audio Mixing (allows the consumer to switch the sound between the main and sub windows). The inclusion of a multi-function SD Card slot is another new addition to the Panasonic Blu-ray player. Coupled with the AVCHD codec, the DMP-BD30 allows for images recorded on a high capacity HD SD card to be outputted directly from the player's HDMI terminal in their original 1080p form. To further benefit the user, the DMP-BD30 provides an AVCHD Direct Navigator function that makes it easy to search for particular scenes. The player can also play back JPEG still images on an SD card, such as those recorded with a Panasonic Lumix digital camera. The DMP-BD30 converts the images to 1920x1080 resolution, ideal for viewing on a1080p HD Plasma and output them through the HDMI terminal.Like its predecessor, the DMP-DB30 features the EZ-Sync HDAVI Control that allows the consumer to operate their Panasonic home theater system with one remote. With one touch of the EZ-Sync button, all the components turn on, the correct TV input is chosen, the TV's built-in speakers are muted and the home theater starts playback.

Panasonic DMP-BD30 31 Mar 2008
By Fishman
This is my first Blu-ray player and will go alongside a Toshiba EP35 HD-DVD player on a Samsung LE46F86 telly and Onkyo 705 AV receiver.

It is one of the first Profile 1.1 players to be available in the UK, which is why I waited for it. Profile 1.1 means that it will play the Picture-In-Picture commentary that some may be interested in.

The HD picture is excellent, easily on-par with HD-DVD. Cars looked stunning. Spiderman 3 is very good indeed. SD DVDs up-scaled very well, I could not see any difference between an up-scaled DVD played on either the BD30 or the EP35, which is quite an achievement.

TrueHD was available on the discs and sounded fantastic. Note that there is no on-board decoding of the newer codecs (TrueHD, DD+, DTS-HD) so you will need to bitstream to a suitable AV receiver that can decode them.

The BD30 is fast to turn on and fast to load. Put your ear to it and you can hear the faint fan, but you have to have your head against it! There was no detectable noise from the disc mechanism either.

If you are waiting for Profile 2.0 (to connect it to the Internet) or have an older AV receiver and need on-board decoding, then the Panasonic DMP-BD50 may be worth waiting for. But the BD30 is excellent and easily recommended.

07/11/08 *Note that the BD30 is being replaced by the BD35 which does do Profile 2.0 and does have Ethernet.

I have been using the player for the past three weeks now and I have been very pleased with the overall picture and sound quality it produces. The player manages to produce above average black levels, vibrant colours, and sharp edges and offers a good level of depth to films.

The player is connected to my 42 inch Panasonic HD Ready TV, which can handle 1080p, images but scales it to fit its native 720 screen. Even with the scaling, the picture is still sharp and crisp, and anybody who is thinking that a HD Ready TV won't be good enough for blue ray, will not be disappointed with this player.

With regards to the sound, I currently have an old AMP which is unable to decode true HD sound through HDMI. To improve the sound quality, I have connected the player to the Amp via the 5.1 channel out put located on the rear of the player. I have used three six standard AV leads, the red and white connections and the set the player to output PCM in the sound menu. This allows access to PCM uncompressed sound and other HD sound content found on blue ray discs.

I can confirm that having played, Hell Boy, through Bitstream using the OPTICAL lead, and compared it to the 5.1 channels, the sound is truly remarkable. I would advise anybody who's Amp has a 5.1 channel input to give this a go. I Understand that HDMI sound would still supersede this option, but it's better than Bitstreaming the sound using optical leads and will do until I can afford a new Amp.

Note - you will have to set the speaker output inside the player's menu, as the process bypasses the decoding on the Amp

Just taken receipt of my Panasonic DMP-BD30, which is a total breeze to setup, connected to my 37" Samsung LE37R88BD LCD TV & my Onkyo TX-SR605 HDMI Amplifier. Everything works perfectly & communicates, each with the other in perfect harmony. You may have read reviews that state this BD player is not compatible with Samsung tvs....this is absolutely not the case. Some have even reported audio glitches with the Onkyo 605...this again is not based in any evidence that I have. Not watched a movie all the way through yet, but was not aware of any sound problems. If its going to happen, it will happen. It will not be random or intermittant, such is the nature of 'digital'.

This is the first BD disc-spinner that can send the raw audio in Bitstream format to a suitably equipped Amp for decoding. My PS3 was my former BD player and could send DolbyTrueHD & DTS-MA in PCM. Now, for the first time my Onkyo displays DTS HD Master Audio & DolbyTrueHD in its display window!!!

Picture quality is on a par, if not much more detailed than the PS3 with excellent black levels & colour reproduction. Sound quality through my Onkyo is also excellent with superb sound placement & LFE levels. So far I am pleased with my purchase. This has, after all, won 5 major awards. Even though the DMP-BD50 is on its way complete with Ethernet connection, I don't personally see the point. This machine does everything that a competant BD player should do, what else do you need? Highly Recommended!
