Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
The DMC-FX37 features a 25mm ultra-wide angle f/2.8 LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with 5x Optical Zoom. The lens provides extra convenience in all shooting situations, like when you're photographing a group of people at a party indoors or shooting a magnificent structure or scene while traveling.

The iA (Intelligent Auto) mode includes MEGA O.I.S. to detect hand-shake, Intelligent ISO Control to detect subject movement, Face Detection to detect faces in the frame, Intelligent Scene Selector to detect scene conditions, Light Detection to detect the brightness level and - new to the DMC-FX37 - AF Tracking to continually track a moving subject and keep it in focus. These six functions work automatically and simultaneously in iA Mode to optimize your settings, making it easier than ever to take beautiful photos every time.

The DMC-FX37 features a newly developed CCD. Slightly larger than previous types, this 1/2.33-inch CCD fully supports the camera's 10.1-megapixel resolution.

The DMC-FX37 can record motion images in high-definition (1,280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps). The DMC-FX37 also supports the HD Output function (1080i output). Simply connect the camera to an HDTV with an optional HD component cable DMW-HDC2, and you can easily view HD Photos on any HDTV. HD Output makes it possible to enjoy both HD motion images and slideshows of your LUMIX still images, complete with music.

Product Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Compact, 5 Feb 2009
By Nik A (Surrey) - See all my reviews
I imagine a lot of people reading the reviews on this page are finding it very difficult to decide which compact to buy. The market is flooded with literally hundreds of great looking cameras with similar specs at a similar price. It's difficult to decide, but having tested a few I can guarantee if you purchase the FX37 you will not be disappointed.

I purchased mine 2 weeks ago and I am delighted. My photos are sharp, the colours are vibrant, I'm so happy with it's performance in low light, with very little noise until reaching ISO800, plus it's HD videos are unbelievable. It's small, the LCD is bright & clear and the wide angle lens along with 5 x zoom is incredibly useful. There are a variety of scene modes to choose from, but if you fancy tweaking things yourself there are also some manual controls you don't usually find on compacts, such as shutter speed, [1/250], [1/125], [1/60], [1/30], [1/15], [1/8], [1/4], [1/2], or [1].

I have posted 6 of my own images up on this page - for some reason the processing they go through via Amazon to be shrunk appears to have reduced the quality slightly, but you get an idea of what this camera is capable of.

Over the past 2 years I have owned or extensively used the IXUS 860, IXUS 75, Panasonic FS20 & Casio Z1080. The FX37 takes the best photos out of all of them - I really am very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend it.

*If you have any questions just ask me via the "comments" under this review.*

UPDATE: I've noticed a reviewer has given the FX37 '1 out of 5 stars' as it doesn't have a viewfinder, but mentions the camera is "great quality" & "easy to use". That doesn't seem an accurate rating seeing as the specification doesn't claim the camera has a viewfinder...it's like buying a non-HD TV and giving it 1 out of 5 stars because it isn't HD!

I've taken 5000+ photos with the FX37 & found the LCD superb in a variety of light, from low light indoors to the brightest sunlight in the Sahara Desert in Egypt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful HD on a decent pocket camera, 16 Feb 2009
By Kai Went (London, UK) - See all my reviews
The HD video:

This capability was a prime reason for purchase and it does not disappoint. Expect crystal clear 720p video with no stutter and very little motion blur on swift pans and fast moving objects. There are some drawbacks however: Firstly it lacks in-video zoom (although you can set the zoom before beginning recording). Secondly, in low light conditions, it records with quite heavy 'vertical smearing' (thin purple lines that appear for a second or so when filming bright lights in darker environments). This is a problem in all compact cameras using a CCD type of light sensor and only affects the video recording, not the photos. Lastly, having a tiny up-facing microphone isn't going to give you camcorder quality sound. Not that the sound is distorted or noisy really, just quite low and muted. All in all though, the high level of quality achieved during daylight filming is enough to make it a worthwhile feature, even given the effects of the constraints imposed by the camera's size and type.

The pictures

I've been very pleased with the picture quality overall. The colour reproduction looks excellent to my eye, very true to what you perceive before taking the shot, whilst the level of fidelity has been more than enough for clean, sharp prints (up to A4) and 21" monitor display. The flash does a great job for such a small camera and even when it's not in use, pictures taken in low-light conditions remain very close to actual perception. In fact, the low-light capabilities have proven surprisingly impressive once the ISO has been limited manually (this camera does not do well past 400).

The camera:

Well, it's damned neat and well-constructed. The LCD screen can be seen in all conditions so that's good. Its very easy to operate and the manual is straightforward enough, so after a day's play you should have the full hang of the camera. Lack of touchscreen here is a bonus more than anything as no features seem to warrant it.

There aren't many available setting adjustments you can make but this kind of compact camera doesn't warrant them either. What there is are features you will actually use and ones that work fast and well enough to enable some quick, well-tuned shots to be taken, whatever the situation. Finally, I'm sure you've heard enough about the wide-angle lens already but it is a very nice feature. After a day's shooting you'll realise "I didn't need to step backwards once", that's the beauty of it.

Conclusion

Nothing bar the HD video quality is going to blow you away here, it's only a 10mp compact after all. That said, it ticks the boxes and keeps up with the direct competition. 4 stars instead of 5 because, no matter how nice HD vids are, in a camera photos are the most important thing and you can get slightly better quality pictures elsewhere for the money.

But if the set of features on offer here:

HD video
comfort afforded by the wide-angle lens
phone-sized form
easy of use
good low-light capabilities
and good but not amazing pictures

is what you're specifically looking for, round that up to 5 stars, as no other camera balances these more completely at present.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good camera, easy to use, 30 Jan 2009
By M. Smith (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After having had several other makes of compact camera I have to say that I like the Lumix FX37 the best out of them so far. The wide angle gives good coverage and the Auto mode pretty much takes care of things for you. The video is pretty good too but the sound is what you would expect of a compact camera. All in all I'm very happy with my purchase. I do regret no buying a 8GB SDHC card, I only got a 4GB. Although it stores loads of pics, on HD mode for the video I'm limited to about 10 mins or so (including 200 pics).
