If you're only ever going to buy one digital camera in your entire life, then this is the one to buy. The camera offers an excellent wide angle 10x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, all in a relatively compact body that will fit in your pocket. Image quality is also excellent, and despite more noise than average, detail is very good. The camera provides an abundance of features, and has an impressive 3" screen. The camera features a very clever "Intelligent Auto" mode and makes using the camera easy, and fun, and provides an abundance of scene modes for beginners. For those looking for more creativity the camera features manual white balance, exposure bracketing, rapid continuous shooting, a histogram, and other image options. Add in an impressive widescreen HD video mode (1280x720 at 30fps) that lets you use the optical zoom whilst filming and you have a very impressive all-round package, all squeezed into a stylish, metal camera. Battery life is also good - I was able to take 275 shots on one charge. Highly Recommended.

    Panasonic DMCTZ5 Digital Camera - Black (9.1MP, 10x Optical Zoom) 3.0" LCD
Pros. This camera is easy to use and takes stunning pictures and excellent movies in high resolution. It has a fine 3ins display/viewfinder and a good menu system, its 10 times zoom lens is great and gets you real close up.The anti shake and face detection work well.

Cons. Battery life not the best (get a spare). Movie sound in mono (not such a problem)

The best camera I've owned highly recommeded.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Pocket All-rounder 21 Mar 2009
I also own a Panasonic DMCFZ28 and a Panasonic Lumix G1 - I guess you could say I'm a great fan of Panasonic cameras with Leica lenses. Although the bridge and SLR cameras offer more features and better picture quality 90% of all my photos are taken with the TZ5 because it's small enough to be carried on my belt at all times in a Case Logic padded case. I live in UK, but work in Africa flying helicopters and because I can always carry it I've managed to get some great local pictures of scenery, local life and wildlife. It's really good for aerial shots because even at high zoom, the image stabilisation is first class and I've managed to get some good night shots even without the use of flash. I've had many small digital cameras but this is in a class of its own and by far the best I've ever owned.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Taking a camera on a walk 12 Jan 2009
    By Emanuel
I brought the Panasonic TZ5 as a pocket camera to accompany me on long walks especially in hilly areas where my DLSR is to heavy. The size means I can use it with gloves, useful in the cold, and hold it steady, The lens quality is excellent and the colour balance very good indeed. The zoom range is useful although care is needed at the longer end. I am impressed with the way the exposure meter coped with snow and brightly coloured jackets recently. I found the start up quick and can manage the screen despite having been used to a viewfinder in the past. Small size prints 7x5 match those of a DLSR.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A class leader 30 Dec 2008
By Paul Madge #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
In this review I am seeking to reconcile the divergent (although mostly favourable) views that have been expressed about this camera (this includes the 3 colour variants, silver, black and blue).

I have billed this as a "class leader" because it succeeds in the niche it is designed to occupy. It is a compact but (not ultra compact)camera with a substantial zoom - at 10x its zoom is significantly greater than most of its competitors. I find it ideal for taking on holiday etc. but, clearly, it is not as versatile as a digital SLR and does not produce results of the the same calibre either. However, these limitations have to be seen in context - it is a small, sub-200 camera with the novelty of a powerful zoom, and, in my view and judged in this way it offers good performance and value but not perfection. The same principle applies when judging the HD video capabilities of the TZ5 - it is good in the context of its market position but it is not comparable to a purpose built HD video camera costing twice as much.

In summary, this is a well featured and constructed camera that is easy to use and which will reward you with good quality but not perfect results. To expect more at this price/size point would be asking too much by the standards of current technology. Providing these limitations/compromises are recognised the TZ5 represents an excellent buy which I believe few will be disappointed with.

    5.0 out of 5 stars TZ5 8 Jan 2009
I ordered this camera just few days ago and aproximate delivery time was about a week but it took only 3 days! great job Amazon!
The camera is superb, high picture quality with no barrel distortions (thanks to Leica optics) is worth mentioning. This camera has one of the best menus I've ever seen, great zoom abilities up to x50 with digital zoom, that can capture the finest details from rather big distances. The CLD display has great size and is self adjusting for different light conditions. Intelligent Auto modes work great. Really reccomend this product if you want something with high quality and convinience of use

5.0 out of 5 stars Compact camera, take anywhere, does most things. 17 Feb 2009
I have done expensive, highly technical, test this, try that, adjust whatever cameras and the subject of the picture has moved before you got past second base. This Panasonic will do me just what I want it to do with great simplicity. Amazing easy to use features and incredible quality pictures from a camera which can be carried easily in the pocket anywhere, anytime, just in case.
