Meet the latest member of the New Generation System Camera LUMIX G Micro System - the DMC-GH2. Fully compliant with the Micro Four Thirds System standard, the LUMIX G Micro System combines a downsized body with advanced functions that achieve both high performance and operational comfort.

The World’s Fastest Level of Light Speed AF *

Featuring an intuitive touch control, the new DMC-GH2 boasts its world’s fastest* level Light Speed AF of approx. 0.1 second to capture the subject in spur-of-the-moment in sharp focus*. The key components, including the sensor and the image processing engine, are totally refined to achieve even higher performance of the camera to render a stunning image with high resolution, beautiful gradation and high sensitivity. For the compact system camera, recording movie is no longer an additional function but a key feature for saving memories.

Full HD Movie Recording

The DMC-GH2 features full HD 1920x1080/60i smooth, high quality movie recording with powerful 60p output**. The cinema-like 24p movie with the bit rate of max. 24 Mbps provides overwhelming image quality with richly expressive afterimage. Furthermore, together with the Cinema mode, which is newly added as an option of popular Film mode, 24p movie enables the movie to have a characteristic superior gradation. The new Variable Movie mode makes it possible to record motion images in variable frame rate creating a fast/slow-feed movie. Activating the newly added EX Tele Conversion function, the user can virtually extend the zoom beyond the original limit to get even closer to the subject. This options is available in both photo and movie modes. The simultaneous HDMI output while recording images is convenient for even professional users to monitor images on a separate screen.

Panasonic's new 3D lens is the world’s first 3D interchangeable lens.
Panasonic's new 3D lens is the world’s first 3D interchangeable lens.

World's first 3D interchangeable lens

Expanding variety of interchangeable lenses is another advantage of the LUMIX G Micro System which boasts a total of 11 exclusive lenses including a new 3D lens LUMIX G 12.5mm / F12 H-FT012. The new 3D lens introduced simultaneously is the world’s first 3D interchangeable lens. Now not only seeing in 3D but also shooting in 3D is now available. The popular My Colour mode and the Film mode including new Cinema mode also adds users’ customisation to each photo and movie.

The iA (Intelligent Auto) mode is constantly evolving and the Intelligent D-range Control is newly integrated in the DMC-GH2. The Intelligent Resolution has new “EXTENDED” option for more natural looking shots when printed in large size.

Enforced by the high-performance based on the new components and advanced technologies, the creative DMC-GH2 is now offering even higher level of creative possibility and intuition for every enthusiastic user to explore realms of not only photography but also of videography at the same time.

* The time for focusing on the subject is measured with the DMC-GH2 attaching LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm / F4.0-5.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. (H-VS014140)* to move the lens to “2m” from “infinity” position. The zoom position is in wide range. Panasonic measurement method.*The firmware must be updated to Ver. 1.3 or later.
** Full-HD (1,920 x 1,080) movies are recorded at 60i (NTSC) / 50i (PAL). HD (1,280 x 720) movies are output and recorded by the image sensor at 60p (NTSC) / 50p (PAL).

Crystallisation of advanced technologies to exceed the limit of expressive possibility

The camera features the world’s fastest level Light Speed AF
The camera features the world’s fastest level Light Speed AF.

Thanks to the high performance, the DMC-GH2 makes the photographic experience even more comfortable and fun. The camera features the world’s fastest* level Light Speed AF of approx. 0.1 second* which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by doubling the drive speed from 60 fps to 120 fps. Not only the accuracy but also the speed excels that of the high-end DSLRs with phase difference AF with the advanced contrast AF system in DMC-GH2. Combined with the Touch AF control, setting and focusing at the subject is incredibly easy and quick, never missing the spur-of-the-moment shot.

The newly developed 16.05-megapixel multi-aspect Live MOS Sensor adopts the high speed digital vMaicovicon. In addition to the high speed, which is an advantage of the CMOS sensor, Panasonic adds its original pixel mix technology. A dedicated process exclusively for vMaicovicon of DMC-GH2 is newly developed by applying the top-class high performance transistor and its interconnection process needed for the high speed operation of digital circuit to make low-noise photodiode and transistor with reduced wiring to achieve both high resolution and high aperture-ratio as in DMC-GH1. The result is both high resolution and excellent S/N with more than 3dB improvement of noise and 200% higher sensitivity in DMC-GH2. Plus, it helps to realize the high speed burst shooting at 5 fps in 16.05-megapixel full resolution using a mechanical shutter and max.40 fps using an electronic shutter.

For the image processor, the new Venus Engine FHD that features exceptionally advanced signal processing capabilities in both photo and movie recording, is incorporated. By separating chromatic noise from luminance noise even more accurately by applying the optimal noise reduction to each, you can capture clear and beautiful images even when shooting at high ISO sensitivity levels. By preventing the colour mixture which tended to occur around the edges, any chromatic noise, not only the in gradation part but also in the edge part, are described clearly. The engine also provides selective noise reduction to the outline part to let it have more naturally-balanced curve without deterioration of the resolution. The Intelligent Resolution technology is another feature of the Venus Engine FHD. With the Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas - outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation areas are automatically detected. The outline parts are enhanced effectively to give edges more clearness while giving a moderate accentuation to the texture areas to look more finely detailed. To the soft gradation part, superior noise reduction system of the Venus Engine FHD is applied to make it smoother. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, the innovative technology Intelligent Resolution precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in the most effective way. As a result, images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and movie recording.

Linking smoothly with the Live MOS sensor, the Venus Engine FHD processes a large amount of signals at high speed, making it possible to record high resolution consecutive shots and full-HD movie recording.

Touch-control shooting

The DMC-GH2 adopts touch-control shooting. While shooting, AF can be set at the desired part of the frame with just a touch. You can also operate the AF and shutter release at the same time. While playing back, you can quickly select an image to view by scrolling images. The 3.0-inch 460,000-dot free-angle LCD with a touch-screen operation makes both monitoring and touching at any physical position. In addition, the Double Live-View function offered by the free-angle LCD and 1,533,600-dot Multi Aspect Wide Screen LVF (Live View Finder).

The DMC-GH2 adopts touch-control shooting.

The My Color Mode and Film Mode featuring new Cinema Mode make it easy to customize color effects to match your favor. In still image recording, the Peripheral Defocus Mode automatically adjusts the focus to match the AF area you positioned while gently defocusing the foreground and background to emphasize the subject. In movie recording, Variable Movie Mode records movie in slow or quick. When the LUMIX G 12.5mm / F12 is attached, the DMC-GH2 can shoot 3D images. To view the recorded images, simply connect the DMC-GH2 to 3D VIERA televisions.

The iA Mode, featuring Intelligent D-Range Control and advanced Intelligent Resolution technology, serves as a combination of functions that makes it easy for anyone to get beautiful photos and movies. With the advanced Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas – outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation areas – are detected. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, this technology precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in most effective way according to the area. As a result, images are clear and crisp.

Good mirorless camera 24 April 2011
Bought the GH2 mainly for video shooting, and as a backup for an Olympus DSLR (may use an existing range of 4/3 oly lenses on both bodies).
Likes:
- video capabilities
- lots of manual settings available
- huge option of quality legacy lenses available via mount adapters
- compact size
- quality swivel/touch screen LCD

Not so good:
- build quality not as expected (cheap feeling plastic body)
- electronic viewfinder (although very good comparing with other EVFs out there, still way behind a good optical viewfinder)
- tiny focusing selection switch (MF/AFC/AFS) on the top left dial, difficult to operate.

SImply the BEST VDSLR! 8 April 2011
By DaiLon
Amazing camera! Tons of customizing and configuring options.
The video quality is hands down the cleanest ive seen. At my work we use 7D, 5D, 60D, and Sony HD Camcorders.
The ability to focus using the touch screen has a lot of potential.
I tested some low light with a Nikon 50 1.4 and the 85 1.4 at 3200 iso and the footage was clear and free of heavy artifacting.
The kit lens is adequate for everyday use
I would get a spare battery if your going out on the town for general shooting.

I bought this camera with the intention of using it as a film camera for small scale productions such as music videos and short films, and occasionally using it as a stills camera as well. After a fair bit of research into choices of lenses I decided that the Micro FourThirds mount offered the greatest amount of flexibility out of the main choices (the other being a Canon EF mount system) as well as the ability to adapt the lenses I already possessed from my previous camera, an Olympus E-410. The GH2 is being marketed as a camera designed for video, with a multitude of options and settings that suit the needs of D-SLR filmmakers and indeed it does, for the most part. It's portability and form factor are unmatched in comparison to other D-SLRs with similar features, which make it ideally suited for 'guerilla' shooting where gear is limited.

The GH2 will shoot in 1080p at 24fps and 1080i 60 or 50fps in AVCHD video as well as 720p at 30fps in Motion JPEG format, which is fine for NTSC video regions, however conspicuously lacking from these options is any coverage for 25fps, i.e. PAL video, the European and UK standard for video. This does not leave very many options for people like myself who need to deliver content in 25p. You can either try and de-interlace 50i footage, which can be a nightmare, or conform 24p video shot with the camera to 25p for editing, however while this 4% change in overall speed does not affect the video greatly, a 4% increase in speed of audio (which also has to be sped up to match) can seriously distort the audio, again making it a nightmare. I honestly cannot fathom Panasonic's decision not to include 25p in this camera, other than to try and push filmmakers that have 25p requirements towards their new AF101 professional camcorder, which costs over £4000. I have used quite a few of Panasonic professional camcorders, both SD and HD including the DVX100, HMC151 and HVX200, all of which I have been very impressed with, which is why my first thought for a camera of my own was a Panasonic, however I would seriously consider your requirements for video when looking at this camera.

My advice is that if you are looking for a camera that can shoot really good video and supports all of the appropriate shooting formats, then opt for the Canon 60D, which with it's kit 18-55mm lens is basically the same price as the GH2 and still features things like the 'Variangle' screen. The 60D, as with all recent Canon D-SLRs, supports 1080p @ 24p, 1080p @ 25p /30p (depending on your region setting, which can be changed) as well as 720p @ 50p /60p (for slow-motion, PAL and NTSC respectively). These options, when compared to the GH2's meagre offerings will probably end up making the decision for you in regards to the camera to buy primarily for video usage.

While I understand that this camera is much more than just a video camera and is still primarily a stills camera, Panasonic's big focus on video in their newest D-SLRs will mean that a lot of people are considering these types of cameras to use almost exclusively for their video modes. I also realise that this review is particularly biased towards video, however, as they always say, "write about what you know." I will therefore leave the evaluation of the GH2's photographic capabilities to people who are better informed than I. Overall, I was really looking forward to using this camera and getting invested in the Micro FourThirds system, but Panasonic's glaring omissions have unfortunately made this product useless for me.
