Manufacturer's Description

Rugged Digital Camera FT4 - for Powerful Outdoor Use with Built-in GPS Function, Compass, Altimeter and Barometer

The DMC-FT4 is waterproof to 12m (40ft), shockproof to 2.0m (6.6ft), freezeproof to -10 degrees C (14 degree F) and dustproof. It is surely the reliable companion for the recorder of your outdoor adventures either in diving, snorkeling, surfing, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, camping or what so ever.

The DMC-FT4 can record full HD 1920 x 1080 videos in AVCHD / MP4 format, thanks to Hi-Speed CCD that features higher transfer processing speed. The AVCHD format excels in the compatibility with AV equipment like HDTVs or Blu-ray DiscTM players. The MP4 format has high compatibility with computers. A separate button lets you instantly start recording video without the need of extra settings. The 4.6x optical zoom and iA Mode are available in video recording. Videos also come with the high-quality sound system of Dolby® Digital Creator.

The built-in GPS function displays not only latitudes and longitudes, but also the area information that covers 203 countries or regions and the landmark information of over 1,000,000 locations in 82 countries or regions. The photos and videos with the location names are automatically sorted in the virtual folder alphabetically in the camera for quick reach. You can also refer them via the included PHOTOfunSTUDIO. Geo-tagged images can be pinpointed on the maps of social media internet maps to be shared with your friends and families.

With the Time Lapse Shot, you can record stationary observation just by setting the start time, interval and number of pictures to shoot. Once everything is set, the camera will automatically continue shooting subjects such as flowers coming into bloom, scudding cloud, or wild animals. The DMC-FT4 adopts compass, altimeter and barometer (indicator for depth underwater) to show and record altitude, barometric pressure and orientation data. The altimeter log helps you forecasting the climate and the log of barometric trend tells how high you are.

The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) boasts double repression power compared to the MEGA O.I.S.. It is particularly effective for a low-frequency vibration, which is physically generated when pressing the shutter button or when shooting at night with a slow shutter speed. You get bright photos without blurring even from handheld shooting at slow shutter speeds. The Active Mode effectively suppresses blur in video recording especially at wide angle while walking or playing with children.

If GPS functionality is important to you when selecting a camera, this model isn't likely to suit you. It updates the GPS only once every 5 minutes (and seemed less often than that to me), so the geotag can place the camera in quite a different location from the camera (even if the GPS location recorded is accurate, whereas it was often around 1-200 metres off, in my tests).

The result is really worse than having no GPS geotagging, since the results are misleading. This is really a shame, since it a great concept to have both a GPS tag and a record of bearing, since this shows you where you are and what the camera was pointed at.

There is a manual GPS update option, but this is buried in the menus and is not practical when you do point-and-shoot.

Unfortunately, for GPS-tagging, an iPhone or other GPS-equipped smart phone is much better. Or it's back to the old technique of carrying a GPS unit and then later synchronising the track with the photos through the time stamp... I hear that the Nikon AW100 has a GPS which is always on, and with a reputation for GPS accuracy, but I haven't tried this. All cameras with GPS will run down their battery quicker, and I guess that is why Panasonic has made what I think is a disastrous compromise in their design.

Thumbs up to Amazon, who have let me return the camera even though I have used it!

Very impressed. 27 May 2012
By Dad
I just got this camera and after setting it up which was very easy i am impressed with the video and picture quality, when i turn my camera off and on total time for the display to show up is 3 seconds, i first tried this camera in our bath in underwater setting and it was pretty imressive.

For those who have doubts about this camera, I then took it to West Wales and used it in the Sea and the campsite pool, i could not be happier, it has done a great job on pictures and videos, the camera comes on within 1 second and ready for use, i have used it under water down to 10-15 feet not one leak into the door housing, the seal is great, i clean the camera under fresh water after every use, and when i open the door to change the battery i wipe the wetness from the seat. i rate this camera a 5 star.

FT4 camera review 23 May 2012
By joe
I recently purchased the Panasonic FT4 and think its great. I did have a few doubts about it letting in water after reading reviews but i think that is down to a one off faulty product as mine has been underwater and has been completely fine.
I used to have an Olympus tough camera and that lasted 6 years but i think the FT4 definitely has a better picture. The only thing i am not too keen on is the fact that there is no lens cover but i still went ahead with my purchase and am very happy with it.
Picture is great, easy to use, looks good and IS waterproof.
