The SDR-H85 records a large volume of movie image data onto its hard disk and an SDXC, SDHC, or SD memory card. This makes the H85 ideal for recording long events and for use on extended trips.This compact camcorder features a powerful 70x optical zoom lens with an enhanced optical 78x zoom function that uses the effective area of the CCD to further extend their zooming power at the wide-angle setting. This makes it possible to capture beautiful images of sweeping landscapes and pull in distant subjects for truly dynamic close-ups.Because hand-shake becomes increasingly noticeable with more powerful zooming, an optical image stabilizing function is essential for suppressing hand-shake and providing clear zoom shots without degradation. This is where advanced O.I.S. comes in. It detects and corrects hand-shake at a rate of 4,000 times per second, to provide stable images while zooming. Plus, the addition of an active mode produces clear, blur-resistant images even when shooting while walking.The wide-angle setting is especially convenient when shooting video indoors or in tight spaces. It makes it possible to shoot at a close distance from the subject while fitting both the subject and the surrounding area into the frame. This has the added benefit of allowing the voice of the subject to be clearly recorded, which is an important element in video recordings. The wide-angle setting captures beautiful images of wide landscapes and allows large groups of people to fit into the frame.The iA function includes an AF/AE tracking feature that tracks a moving subject to make sure that it continues to be recorded in optimal image quality. A intelligent contrast control, which automatically adjusts brightness to maintain the best possible contrast, has also been added to the five advanced functions from previous models, including face detection, advanced O.I.S., and intelligent scene selector, and each is activated as required by simply pressing the iA button to capture beautiful images under virtually all shooting situations.

I Bought this camera a few weeks ago primarily to film my sons Athletics events, having tried before to video using my digital compact camera and having found it somewhat restrictive.
I looked at many reviews including the latest Panasonic High definition cameras and ended taking a bit of a gamble with this one as there were no reviews at the time but the reviews of it's features were what had attracted me to it's HD brothers. I went for the standard definition as my main usage is to upload to 'you tube' and link to websites for which standard definition seems to be fine.
Having now been at two track meetings one without a tripod and one recently using my 25yr old Slik 88 tripod I would agree with the other review I have just read that a tripod is best at high magnification though the image stabilisation works really well. I am looking for a video tripod now to make the panning a little less rough.
The 80 gig hard drive is plenty for holidays etc and you have the additional option of an SD memory card if required so there are really no limits on storage. I am very pleased with the end results the zoom has enabled me to get close in to any part of the track from wherever I have positioned myself and the software that came with it makes it really easy to upload to you tube. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to create a link here to show but I am certainly impressed.
The camera feels solid, probably helped with the hard drive on the side, the SD card fits in securely unlike one of the other Panasonic cameras where this was mentioned as a problem, I have average sized hands and found operating both the zoom and the lcd panel menus comfortable and intuitive
I still have lots to play with on this but have to say I would certainly recommend this camera for my sort of use and holidays, I also did a little bit of indoor filming and was pleased with that.

The unit is compact - extremely good image stabilisation.
No problems using for general 'holiday shots'
Screen always easy to view.
You will need a tripod when using zoom over about 25 x's. But witha bit of practise it is possible to use at 25x's to 30 x's without one.
The hard disc capacity is more than ample for a two week holiday (don't forget the charger though)
Just bear in mind it is not HD quality - but the image is good.
It wasn't always obvious in the heat of taking a shot that it was in record mode, and it wasn't obvious that you'd stopped shooting. Hence a number of shots of my armpit from my pocket.
Didn't use in low light conditions - so can't comment on that.

This camcorder is AMAZING! Its 80gb HDD allows you to film on the go without having to worry about remembering your memory cards or DVD's etc. But it has the added benefit of a SD card slot so you can record and/or take photos then place them directly on your laptop and see you footage within seconds! The battery life is brilliant and the feel and look of the camera is really neat. Very small, it fits perfectly in your hand and is so comfy, you will forget it is there! The camcorder has a mega 78 x Enhanced optical zoom (one of the best around) and 33mm Wide angle lens. It comes with a recharge unit for the battery and full instructions- though you will not need them as it very simple to use. I am really impressed with this camcorder.

Good camcorder for everyday use
