Awesome ! 4 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD
I can't get enough of this series ! Until Vol 1 I was completely ignorant of the wonderful 6Ts & 7Ts grooves coming out of Panama. The first volume completely blew me away. Where it succeeded I think was in compiling Panamanian music that had obvious influences from the more well known genres , Funk being one example. However, there was enough ethnicity in the album to give it a unique and exciting feel. I love my funk, soul, bossa, latin soul...ETC , and vol 1 was very easy to embrace

Vol 2 in the series builds on the original concept, but ups the cultural ante by being just a little bit more folksy - but please don't let the "F" word put you off! The folk element is typified by the inclusion in a few places of the accordion. Before this series I associated the accordion with dodgy French musicians playing moonlight serenades, but the Panamanians take this wonderful sounding instrument to a whole new groovy level. Listen to the samples to judge for yourself.

Anyway - Well done Soundway ! Another fantastically compiled scorcher of an album. Keep it going !

Chuleta! My favorite of the three ... 11 Nov 2011

Here's why: Quintessential Panama. Most of the music on this CD reflects more of the indigenous culture and how it blended into the popular music. Indeed, main compiler Roberto Gyemant spent quite some time in Panama's Interior, searching for old vinyl records for this set. This is the kind of music a visitor to panama would hear second hand - on the street, so to speak. It could be coming out of car radios passing by, or even in a taxi ride, or far away from the cities. One could be hiking in the Interior or just walking around the outskirts of Isla Taboga. Someone is partyin' somewhere! I have to admit, for myself it's an acquired taste. I lived in Panama for two years and it took a while for this stuff to sink in. Now when I get homesick for one of my favorite places in the world, I can listen to this one and it takes me right back. Chuleta ... I love this stuff!

That's my vote for Volume 2. Go to Volume 1 if you are new to Latin sounds and want to hear music that is closer to American rock, R&B, soul etc. If you end up loving that stuff, you can dig deeper and come back to this one.

Volume 3 has more Caribbean influences in it. Pick that one if you wanna "put de lime in de coconut and drink it all up", and drink a little more.
