This is the better guide of all the ones I have bought for South America.
Lonely Planet guides are interesting and colourful.
This actually tells you there is nothing to go to Colon for unless on a cruise ship. Then don't leave the tourist area. Colon is a very dangerous and run down area.
I am not a "cruiser" but have recently lived here for a few months.
A great country, very safe other than odd pickpocketers. And different, not the normal destination for a holiday.
Great weather too. Everything you want to know about Panama is in this book.

Rough Guide is more comprehensive and Frommers is more readable but Lonely Planet was pretty useful during our trip, the maps were also very good. Didn't agree with everything it recommended/praised but that's a matter of taste I guess.

This book had information on getting around Panama efficiently and proved to help plan a very successful vacation. It could really use more maps and the maps could use better detail.

LP covered Panama well, I generally like LP books and am very familiar with format, which makes it easy to find stuff. I started using LP books about 15 years ago though, so on this last trip I realized that I've grown out of my backpacking phase. It's generally a great book, but really basic and for the budget backpacker. Somewhat opinionated (which is needed at times) I guess I was looking for a more sophisticated approach. If you keep buying the same type of travel books, you'll keep getting the same type of experience info.
