Product Description

Review

'A rollicking biography, weaving raunch with realpolitik, told with the bold swagger of Palmerston himself.' (Daily Telegraph )

'An excellent introduction to the great man' (Independent on Sunday )

'James Chambers exhibits a keen eye for the social as well as the political nuances of the day ... He takes a scholarly and properly sceptical approach to the multifarious sources ... best of all, he adopts an elegant, ironic literary style perfectly suited to its subject ... the author has the knack of making complex diplomatic issues easily comprehensible ... [he] superbly captures both the subtlety behind the bluster of this most magnificent of 19th-century prime ministers and what he calls his "infuriating but convincing air of jovial confidence"' (Andrew Roberts, Sunday Telegraph )

'Engaging biography ... Chambers captures the puckish personality of the man and his aristocratic, irreverent, often louche milieu' (Sunday Times )

' A long overdue biography written with great elan.' (Daily Echo )

'Chambers [writes] with great clarity, he is vivid without being lurid, and this is a superb book' (Sunday Times )

'The author does a good job of convincing us that behind the bluster and irreverence Palmerston was a shrewd and earnest leader.' (Daily Echo )

Sunday Times

'Engaging biography ... Chambers captures the puckish personality of the man and his aristocratic, irreverent, often louche milieu'

First Class 4 July 2004
Format:Hardcover
James Chambers has produced a fine account of one of England's greatest statesmen. Palmerston's reputation has suffered, says Chambers, who clearly has a high, although not uncritical regard for the People's Darling. It was in foreign affairs where Palmerston excelled at a time of great political instability on the Continent. There are amusing accounts of the almost routine differences of opinion that existed between Palmerston & Queen Victoria, following the Queen's marriage to Albert, with Palmerston pursuing his policies with efficiency & good humour, and with an absent-minded disregard for the Royal Couple's views.

I've enjoyed reading this biography immensely. It is scholarly without being laborious. There's now a trio of first class, very readable biographies of the great leaders of England in the 19th Century - Chambers' Palmerston; Blake's Disraeli & Roberts' Salisbury.

Format:Hardcover
A magisterial modern political biography of a great war minister, foreign secretary and prime minister with a great deal of relevance to today's neo-imperialistic strategies. The book is firmly anchored in Palmerston's background at Harrow, Wessex and Ireland, and not the least of its strengths lies in the author's elegant resumé of the background politics relevant to the events so fluently but succinctly described. He is also shrewd on the personalities of the major players and the interpretation of motive. Written with great verve, style and wit, it deserves to become the major popular work on the topic for the modern generation.

Palmerston: The People's Darling is an enjoyable book which moves along at high speed tellng the story of one of Britain's most charismatic and enigmatic politicians who had a larger than life existence. However, although it is highly enjoyable it lacks the in-depth analysis of other political biographies and even if this takes nothing away from the book and perhaps makes it more accessible for the casual reader, however, for anyone wanting a warts and all book covering all areas of his life thoroughly this is perhaps only a starting point.
