Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Palm handhelds have succeeded because they're small and lightweight but hold a surprisingly large amount of personal data. The Palm m105 handheld expands on those essential features by offering an organiser that's smaller and lighter (4.4 ounces) than most others while remaining packed with 8 MB of memory, so it can do much more than just store your calendar or addresses. The m105 is also one of the most comfortable Palm devices we've held--its distinctive curved bottom rests comfortably in the palm. Like other Palm devices, the m105 includes an infrared port for beaming data to other handhelds, and it features a high-contrast screen with optional backlighting for low-light situations. At 2-inches square, the screen is slightly smaller than those on most Palm organisers. We noticed the difference since we've been using Palm handhelds for some time, but the m105 retains the same 160-by-160-pixel resolution, so this probably won't be a distraction for most users.

However, unlike other Palm handhelds, the m100 series includes two special applications. The Clock displays the date and time if you simply push the top scroll button on the front, even when the device is off. (It can also be viewed through a window in the cover.) And with the Note Pad, we could write notes or draw pictures directly on the screen without having to write in Graffiti, Palm's character-recognition language.

With more memory, the m105 can now hold more software--and Palm has provided a range of possibilities on the accompanying CD-ROM. Palm's Mobile Internet Kit, normally sold separately, is a software collection that allows the m105 to communicate via infrared link with a GSM cellular phone (such as the Nokia 8290). The kit includes MultiMail Pro software for managing e-mail, programs for SMS text messaging and WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) browsing, and software for accessing Web Clipping data over the Palm.net network. Also included on the CD-ROM is the AvantGo Web browser.

The Palm m105 includes a HotSync cradle (the m100 handheld shipped with just a cable) for synchronising data between the handheld and a desktop or laptop computer. Macintosh owners, or anyone wishing to use a USB port on a Windows system will need to purchase the USB serial adapter, though the Mac version of the Palm Desktop software is included in the box.

We were disappointed to find that the Windows version of Palm Desktop included on the CD-ROM is one generation behind the latest release. However, you can download Palm Desktop 4.0 for free from Palm's Web site, making this only a one- time nuisance. Additionally, the m105 is not flash upgradeable, so you won't be able to update to a newer version of the operating system later on (the m105 comes with Palm OS 3.5).

With the addition of more memory and Internet access software, plus its comfortable, lightweight design, the Palm m105 is an entry-level handheld that doesn't feel like the new kid on the block. --Jeff Carlson

The title says it all really. Amazing value, an amazing 8mb of memory and an amazing range of software available out there on the net. I was first introduced to Palm by one of my friends, and I was outstanded by how much the m105 could do. As a student I can be very organised with everything using the MemoPad and writing everything down using the graffiti pad. The graphiti pad is really fast and useful but it needs some time to get used to and you can get tought using a game called Giraffe. I would recommend the m105 instead of the m100 because you don't need to worry about running out of memory because 8mb is plenty enough and would be kind of impossible to fill. The size of Palm applications are so small that they can fit on your Palm easily ( Download time est. 1sec on 56k) for any application. Well Done if you buy the Palm 105 and enjoy, it's amazing and you will regret it if you don't buy it.

    A Big Surprise 20 April 2002
    By A Customer
I bought this device because it was cheap and I wanted to see if it I could make enough use of it to justify buying a more expensive model. No problems setting it up and, after 3 months I don't need to spend any more because the M105 does everything I want - and more. No problems setting it up. OK, I had to buy some more software but now I can keep diary, to-do lists and contact details current, write meeting notes, draft memos, view spreadsheets, read books and PDFs of technical documents. No need for a laptop any more and consumption of paper has dropped dramatically. Battery life appears good although I don't really have anything to compare it with - three sets of AAA in 3 months of daily and sometimes heavy use. Graffiti took some getting used to but becomes easier with practice and encourages brief meeting notes- a good thing. The daily newspaper feed provided by Avantgo is fantastic, particularly Guardian Unlimited, and means I actually read the papers every day - something I rarely managed before. It also seems able to cope with being dropped - quite frequently. Sometimes colour would be nice (not essential) but B&W is perfectly acceptable most of the time.

Overall just about the best bargain I've ever had.

    Budget Brilliance 26 April 2001
When I chose to buy a PDA there was one factor that governed my decision, Price!

I am a student and so ready cash is not easy to come by. That said I wanted something that was going to stand the test of time and not be obsolete within a month. The obvious choices were the Handspring Visor and Palm m100 ranges. After careful Internet investigation and a crash course in what PDA's actually do I decided on the Palm range. The palm m100 series machines seemed to be more user friendly than the Handspring alturnative as well as being the more cost effective option.

For someone who has had no experience with PDA's Palm seemed to be the obvious choice. Now I had made my choice of mannufacturer there was one decision left to make, which model?Again an investigation into applications, accessories, and PDA memory as well endless comparisons between the m100 and m105.

Needless to say, after careful deliberation the obvious choice was the m105. For the slightly higher price there were a few major advantages over the m100, more software (mobile Internet being one), hot sync cradle, and an extra 6mb of memory, bringing the total up to a grand 8mb.

After having the m105 for 2 weeks now I feel it is a gadget I could not do without and am very glad I paid the extra.. for the "GTI" model. Now I have enough memory for all the applications, web pages, mail and memos I ever want. Not to mention the hundreds of games available on the net, but I didn't buy a PDA for games, us students are too busy learning, learning where the cheapest pints are that is.

    Cheap, and it shows.
Well, it is the cheapest PDA around, and the memory is pretty decent - at least 8Mb goes a long way with PalmOS. Read more

Good - but poor build quality
First of all, this is my first palm and it's great. It's small enough for your pocket and there are literally hundreds of useful little freeware apps out there for it. Read more

    PAD-sized PDA
Beautifully small. That's where it really scores over Psion - even the Revo, which I've been using since it was launched. Psion's machines are actually better in most ways. Read more
