Amazon.co.uk Review

Tired of using the stylus for tedious "typing" and handwriting on your Palm V organiser? The Palm portable keyboard not only gives you a full-size QWERTY keyboard for touch-typing on your Palm organiser, but also folds up for portable convenience.

The keyboard folds into a 3.5-by-5-inch case that is only slightly larger than the Palm organiser itself. At 0.875 inches thick, the portable keyboard is a little too large to fit into most shirt pockets, but it will fit into a jacket pocket and takes up very little room in a briefcase or purse.

To set up the keyboard driver, it is hardly necessary to consult the instruction manual. Simply insert the accompanying software disk into the PC and double-click the PRC icon on the desktop. Inserted the Palm organiser into its HotSync cradle and press the HotSync button. To open the portable keyboard, slide its side-mounted thumb-switch down, unfold its panels, and slide the left and right sides of the keyboard together until they lock into place. There is a sliding support behind the portable keyboard's dock connector, into which the Palm organiser slides. Then, start the Memo application on the Palm and begin typing.

Typing on the portable keyboard is much like typing on a notebook PC. The response of the keys is quite comfortable, and the tactile feedback is satisfying. The keys are also positioned well for fast touch-typing. Note that you can only use the portable keyboard on a firm flat surface; you cannot use it on your lap because the keyboard's centre hinge does not lock. It is also advisable to handle the portable keyboard gently, as it is made from thin and lightweight materials.

For people who need to use their Palm for memos, e-mail, writing reports, or any activity that requires entering more than just a few words, the Palm portable keyboard tremendously convenient, especially given its small size and portability.

To be totally honest I bought this product because I thought it looked nifty and would impress my work mates (which it did and still does). However, two minutes after opening the box the keyboard was installed and working like a dream. No messy installation, just pop in the disk, install the 25K software and sync the Palm, all done.
The keyboard feels great to type on, like a high quality laptop and it beats the wrist ache I (and others) get from writing in graffiti all the time.
It looks great and works pretty much perfectly, although I wasn't too impressed with some of the shortcut keys, they do the job but they can't operate the menu's, a small price to pay as I just keep my stylus handy anyway.
Since I've had this I practically never use my laptop on the move because my Palm can do pretty much everything I need my laptop to do and is much smaller and easier to carry (i don't have to wait for it to boot either just to type up a document)
In conclusion I'd say if you have a Palm this is a must have, it's certainly money well spent and I'd be pretty much lost without it now.

This is fantastic, pure and simple. It makes the Palm a wonderful tool on which to take real time notes, and the action is as good as most laptops you'll come across.
Just two gripes, which in no wise can be used to dock a star from the rating:
1. It's a US layout, with <shift-2> being "@", not """. 2. It prevents AppHack from working on my machine. However, my copy of the hack is pretty old, so I'm going to check NOW for an updated release.
BTW, just in case you missed it above: I love this product.

This cleverly designed and compact keyboard enables you to process larger chunks of information at speed. It is lightweight and robust, much better than having to carry a laptop around and great for train journeys, especially the longer ones we've been experiencing in the UK recently!

For those who don't like frantically tapping and scratching out graffiti characters, the foldout keyboard is a Godsend. Of course, you're reducing the portability of the unit a little... With the stylus alone, you can work from your seat on a train, with no table top available. If you want to use a keyboard regularly, consider a small laptop or a Psion as an alternative... Apple made a lightweight keyboard for the Newton, though, so this piece of kit has a good ancestry. A shame the Palm equivalent requires a software installation to operate - that was sloppy. (Expect battery life to suffer when using the keyboard, but with rechargeable batteries, it needn't cost the Earth to use.) All in all, three and a half stars. Uh, what the hell... four.
