5.0 out of 5 stars This is a winner!!, 7 Aug 2005
By J. Page "J Page" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My first PDA was a Palm Vx a few years ago and I loved the simplicity and usability of it. Last year I decided to upgrade it to an iPaq which I subsequently sold because it was rarely used and the battery life was poor, I checked on Amazon a few weeks ago and spotted the E2 and the main thing that I liked about it was that it uses non-volatile memory i.e. if the battery is depleted you don't lose your data. This, though, is one of many great features of the E2 and for the price I decided it was very good value and bought one. It was only when I started using it I realized just how good the Palm OS and software really is. It is really nice to use and I wouldn't hesitate recommending it. You can even view and edit MS Office files on it so it has most, if not all, if the features that it's more expensive counterparts have but at a fraction of the price. Lastly, the battery life is fantastic. Although I am not a heavy user I have only had to charge it twice in the month that I have owned it. This is a winner. You won't be disappointed,

4.0 out of 5 stars The World in your Palm, 12 May 2007
I'm now on my second Palm. The first suffered a cracked screen when I fell over with it in my pocket. The repair cost was almost as much as a new machine so .... Fortunately I had backed it all up to my laptop so downloading the data and added programs was a doddle. The new machine just took over from the old one.

Data entry is reasonable straight forward. I use the graffiti hand writing which is pretty easy although this touch screen is slightly less sensitive than the one on my first machine so I have to 'push' a little harder. There are one or two other differences. The on/off switch is less sensitive so switiching on and off is more hit and miss. More annoying is the search facility in Dataviz 'Word'. On my first machine there was a virtual search button. Type in "Japan" and you could search the whole document then "Find Next" and "Find Next" and so on. I can't do this on the Tunsten 2 ... guess I'll just have to read the instructions - how annoying!

That minor point aside I now use the machine as a MP3 player with Real Player and the tracks stored on a SD card, keep holiday snaps on it, play games (occassionally), word process, store contact details and use it as a 'virtual memory' now my real memory is succumbing to the ravages of middle age. I would be lost without it - which reminds me, I'd better do a back-up today. This is also an easy process as is adding new programs and importing data.

I've had one of these for the last 4 years now. It does everything I want and more besides and does it well.

I don't use it to access the internet, although I believe you can, and although it will link to a mobile phone it is a very old tech way of doing so. If you need your organiser to be your phone as well, this isn't the machine for you. If you need a basic, adaptable, easy-to-use, reliable organiser with a few added bells and whistles, this one's good enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bargain for the money..., 15 Jul 2005
By A Customer
Upgrading after several years with an Palm m500 the E2 shows just how far PDA's have come. I think this machine is really good value. Buy an expansion card if you want to store pics/video/music & extra apps. The screen is really bright and clear even on lower brightness settings and the audio's not bad either. DocumentsToGo works well and has hi-res zoomable fonts which, for me, is a big plus.
The 200Mhz processor struggles a bit to playback video with higher-bitrates - but re-encoding to a lower size/kbps gives acceptable results. However, I was doing all this from the SD card - it's no doubt quicker from internal RAM.
The battery life is supposed to be a big improvement on the other Tungstens - mine had only just dropped to 99% after a week of intermittent usage so it looks promising.

A couple of niggles - the lack of cradle is a bit disappointing as the sync cable connector looks a bit delicate and there is no voice recorder but I guess they had to cut costs somewhere

I'd say it's easily best PDA for the money :-)
