Product Description

Just two months before their farewell concert The Last Waltz, The Band performed an electric show at the iconic New York venue, The Palladium. The performance was broadcast live on local radio station WNEW FM, allowing everyone in the vicinity to hear this dynamic gig. It may have been one of The Band's last live performances, but the passion in their music showed no sign of wavering. Their more famous and high profile goodbye concert performed alongside the good and great of contemporary music a couple of months henceforth would become the group s swansong thanks to the film of the event made by Martin Scorsese, but this more intimate affair provides an excellent opportunity to hear just how great The Band were sounding live in a more traditional setting at this juncture.

This is something of a mixed bag. The sound is very strange, constantly shifting in its mix; one minute echo-y, the next flat, often in the same song. Not as terrible as lots of bootlegs I've heard, but pretty distracting. Because of that, the featured horn ensemble is kind of wasted. The performances are solid (they always seemed to be with The Band, for the most part), but the repertoire is familiar. For followers, better buys would be the 4-cd LAST WALTZ box, the newly remastered 2-CD version of the 1971 ACADEMY OF MUSIC set, or--a great surprise--the recently released 1976 Carter Barron Amphitheater show from Washington DC (recorded 2 months before this set, minus the accompanying horn ensemble). I'm assuming that this DC show is a bootleg as well--but even if that's the case, the sound on it is very good. This one, not so much.

The Band live was usually an experience to remember for all the right reasons and so it is with this live recording of a show not long before the now legendary, and sadly final performance of the groups original lineup at The Last Waltz. Wonderful playing of classic songs and, as usual, brilliant interplay between the bands three lead singers. The most musically talented group of all time playing as well as they ever did. If you love good music get this excellent album!

Not to put too fine a point on it, the sound of this is horrible. It's puzzling as, in my experience, these quasi-legal European releases sourced from radio broadcasts are usually pretty listenable. I love The Band but this one is going in my "sell at the used record store" pile. (For a superb recent live Band release, pick up CARTER BARRON AMPHITHEATER WASHINGTON DC, JULY 17TH 1976)

Excellent radio broadcast CD from just a few weeks before the last Waltz was recorded, but a very different kind of show and a very decent one. Great track selection and a pretty awesome sound make for one cool CD - get it while you can, these things don't tend to hang around for long....

Typical bootleg recording.Good performance, plenty of energy, but inconsistent sound quality. Decent horn section in evidence.Sounds like a rehearsal for The Last Waltz 2 months later.
