4.0 out of 5 stars Two Blokes In Suits Singing 13 Nov 2011
By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
That Reid Paley and Black Francis have joined forces to make this
perfectly eccentric and decidedly awkward album is reason to be jolly.
When Mr Paley sings "I'll unleash my cats on your salty brain" on opening
track 'Curse' you just know that you're in for a bumpy musical ride.
It is as though two old friends who have been propping up the local
bar together for more years than it would be prudent to mention, have
hunkered down in a studio with a crate or two of what oils their wheels
best and (as the painter Francis Bacon might have put it) "open{ed} up the
valves of feeling". What they've come up with is really rather splendid!

There are ten songs in the set and the rough-and-ready ambience would seem to
suggest that most of what we hear happened in not much more than one take.
There is a grubby, ramshackle charm running through the album which becomes
curiously addictive after a while. The urban visions of The Velvet Underground
are never too far away (particularly on songs like 'Magic Cup', 'Deconstructed'
and 'Praise') but here and there a greater lyricism intrudes ('Ugly Life' and the
gloriously doleful 'Happy Shoes') and drags a crooked smile across our semi-gritted
teeth. 'Crescent Moon' is an especially weird and wonderful nocturnal treat!

It's strange and it's good which, I guess, makes it strangely good.

Cautiously Recommended To Those Of A Robust Disposition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A return to form!! 15 July 2012

This is arguably Black Francis most impressive work since the great 'Catholic' days. 'Curse' is quite simply a belter of an opener, which you just want to sing along to!! In fact, the whole album is of a very high standard with 'Praise' being a personal favourite. His output has been patchy in recent years, Nonstoperotik being evidence of this. However, the bar room blues feel of this seems to suit the 2 artists perfectly. Both seem to be having a good time!! Don't purchase if you have a hankering for a Pixies throw back, but do so if you wish to hear 2 great artists on the top of their game.
