4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read 6 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is one of the books for young people that Zafon wrote before moving into adult fiction. The story is set in Calcutta in the 1930s and follows the fortunes of a group of youngsters recently leaving an orphanage as they battle with some dark forces.

Zafon is excellent in his atmospheric writing and is a splendid master of language. Though my Spanish is not completely fluent I could appreciate his talent and enjoy the story.

If you enjoy this, try "La Sombra del Viento", his very successful book for adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! 14 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I became addicted to Zafón after reading "The Shadow of the Wind", so I just had to read his other books as well. I love his style, his obsession, his darkness. Choosing India as the scene for his story, makes the book even more special. Great read, for teenagers and adults alike.

3.0 out of 5 stars Uneven and inferior 25 Jan 2008
By Pipo Jones - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
After reading The Shadow of the Wind and El Principe de la Niebla, both of which I loved, I wasn't impressed with this novel. There's a quality to the writing (or perhaps a lack thereof) that doesn't make it involving and I found myself not caring much for the characters. There are elements of gothic novel here, but the psychological stimulus for horror is unconvincing and so the supernatural element falls flat. Although I wouldn't regret reading it, the novel didn't leave much of an impression and I'm convinced that in a few months I will forget that I read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please note... 3 Feb 2007
By Cheryl K. Hughes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I have not read this book. I ordered it thinking it was the follow-up to The Shadow of the Wind. El Palacio... is an adolescent book as is El Principe de la Niebla, Marina, and Las Luces del Septiembre. So those of you breathlessly awaiting the follow-up to "Shadow", as I am, take note.
