PRAISE FOR PALACES AND CALLUSES

"The quality of the work rises above that of much of today’s popular literature ... She has an easy style that makes you want to leap to the next page. She’s just a natural." ~ Mary Louise Ruehr (Books Editor for the Record-Courier in Ohio)

"Easy to read and hard to put down. I read it from start to finish in two days, something I haven’t done in a while... I became almost obsessed with finding out whether or not Mary, the protagonist would get her life back." ~ Elpi Pamiadaki (Libri Populus)

"Palaces and Calluses left me wanting more: more about Mary and her life, more about the other characters and their stories, and more about the faces and places of the Cotswolds ... Rebecca Woodhead has found her niche and her passion!" ~ Melissa Maday (Book Reviewer)

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick, enjoyable fun 5 Sep 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This isn't the sort of book I normally read, but it's priced low (and was free for a while) so I gave it a go.

Rebecca Woodhead has a very accessible, easy style to her writing, and covers a lot a ground quickly, so it's not a ponderously long read, and there are a fair few comic situations to lighten the mood.

The set-up in the first chapter was brisk, so we very quickly get to the point. I'm glad I didn't know too much about the main character in chapter one, otherwise I might not have had much sympathy for her; but by the time I did learn more about her, I was already on her side and wanting things to turn out well for her.

That's the thing about this book - there are some enjoyable characters (including the dog).

If I have a criticism, it's that the final chapters went by a little too quickly. I would have liked things to slow down a little and be explored in a bit more depth.

But it ends in a way that could result in a nice series with people you'd want to revisit.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good start. 29 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm not really into what is widely known as 'chic-lit' but this was easily read and I enjoyed it. I hope the author goes from strength to strength, as I'm sure she will.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Surprise 9 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I guess because this was my first read of so-called chick-lit, I didn't start to really "get" this book until I stopped taking it so seriously and started to enjoy it for the light-hearted, campy, high-energy romp it is meant to be. The book just gets better and better as it moves along. The author writes smoothly and with confidence about a young woman's journey from glamour and superficiality to discovering who she really is what she really values. Buoyant, funny, and quirky, this book was a delight to read. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, the author throws you a curve - and keeps the story open. I'll definitely be reading the follow-up novel on this to find out what happens to Mary and Jackie. An impressive first novel - well done!
