5.0 out of 5 stars The Last Emperor (finally) hits Europe, 15 Dec 2004

This review is from: Palace of the Pretender (Audio CD)
It's been a struggle but in the end the best things are worth waiting for and this album certainly is from the mythical Last Emperor.

Holding it in my hands its hard to imagine it would take this long from the then fresh faced MC who featured on Lyricist Lounge Vol. 1 way back in 1998. After zigzagging the US and one failed record deal after another he has finally got something tangible to show for his hard graft on the tours and so do his many patient fans.

For those who imported Music, Magic, Myth and hoping for another completely new album, you will be disappointed that there is only three "new" tracks. However those who did not then you've got a treat in store.

The album contains some real classics - the tearful One Life featuring the last track the late Poetic graced is very powerful and won't leave many dry eyes. The guitar laden Incredible Man which should (but sadly won't) get many clubs bouncing. On to the fantasy story driven Great Pretender, I wish he would do more of these types of tracks as they sound refreshing and invoke wild imagery. Two of the three tracks which did not feature on Music, Magic, Myth are some of Last Emperor's very best. The Drifter is a heavy hearted tale of jilted love; with some wonderful production it can bring back many personal memories. And the absolute classic EchoLeader in which Last Emperor goes sci-fi with a tale of post apocalyptic survival - with its booming production and classic lyrics it should be hearld as a Hip Hop classic.

The Last Emperor finishes off which what will probably be the track he will be remembered for - Secret Wars. He sets up fights between Hip Hop legends and his favourite comic book characters. Part two is slightly weaker then the seminal first part but a worthy successor none the less.

Overall this album is a must have whatever your musical tastes. His lyrics are inclusive and the production is varied up to scratch on every track from the soulful love songs to the block-party anthems.

Hopefully this will push the Last Emperor on to bigger things; he deserves the limelight even thought I'm not sure even wants it. I just hope the "proper" second album does not take the 5 years his first did...
