I have long been fascinated by the history of the Crystal Palace, ever since I lived in South London and explored the remains of the gardens and the site of the High Level Station. I bought a copy of 'The Crystal Palace' by Beaver in 1970 and was delighted to discover this volume 'Palace of the People' on Amazon.
It is a sumptuous volume with very many archival pictures in full colour. There are also many black and white images that add to the detail of the excellent text. J.R. Piggott's text is thoroughly researched and authoritative. It is also highly readable, in a very accessible style.
The concept of the original 'Great Exhibition' in Hyde Park is of great interest, in its own right. However the removal of the Palace to Sydenham Hill, where it became the venue for quite extraordinary exhibitions for 80 years, provides the greatest interest in changing social taste and values - The Crystal Palace can be seen as the precursor to today's 'theme parks'. This volume does full justice to that area of history.
