Format: Audio CD
Under various pseudonyms Palace Brother Will Oldham has developed a reputation for his creaky countrified parables of moonshine, incest and horses that now almost precedes him, and while this album is unlikely to alter this perception of him, it stands out as the starkest and bleakest collection that he has yet committed to record.
Essentially a stripped down version of the blueprint set out by the first Palace Brothers album ('93's "There Is No One What Will Take Care Of You"), here Oldham dispenses with everything but the most gentle of acoustic guitars, and his own cracked vocals.
Despite the fairly minimal production values (slamming doors and what sounds like distant thunder can be heard in the background during "No More Workhorse Blues"), what really stands out is the strength of the songwriting, which veers from tender to detached, but which remains impressive throughout, especially on tracks like "Whither Thou Goest", and closer "I Am A Cinematographer".

This was my 1st introduction to Will Oldham ...

I saw the Palace Bros at the Marquee in '94 ...

I just re bought this CD after many years without it.

Will already was an accomplished & unique talent at this point - I'd put this with along with Master & Servant & Superwolf as being one of my favourite Will albums.

It's a downbeat acoustic Gem of a record.

Somehow akin to Big Stars 'Sister Lovers'

If you love Will & are checking out his early works - Be sure to buy this CD.

It's a thing of beauty.

As strong as any Palace Brother album, it drags you into to a southern gothic moment.
