2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 24 Sep 2009

Prepare yourself for thinking the worst of the place - you want to go and see. The book is strewn with critical prose. For instance

The maps are too small to be of any use. In other guides - when there is a big city - and a big map is needed - a good guide book will spread the map out over several pages. Not in the Lonely Planet.

The pages are so thin - that the publisher has managed to get 432 pages into a book that is 15mm thick (5/8 of an inch). Now you may think - that an advantage. But try reading the pages without being distracted by the text coming from the other side of the page - the negative tone of the guidebook - and those awfully small maps with writing bleeding over from the underlying page. I was hoping for a book which would have the useful stuff you expect from a guidebook - but also to make you feel like you are going to an exciting place.

Tells you where places and how to get to them but doesnt give much of a insight into the local folklore and interesting backgrounds of the places you visit.

So the book is fine - if you dont want to like the people of the country but want to know how to get about (but even then doesn't help you with those unnecassry negative comments and rubbish maps)

Now, the bizarre parts. If you want to find out where to go ten-pin bowling in Islamabad or turtle-spotting in Karachi - this book will tell you. If you really want to know in the first place.

One last thing there is no point putting at the front of the book 7 full-colour pages laid out like tourist leaflet; people going to Pakistan will already know that kind of information or they would never havew booked a flight to Pakistan in the first place. I was hoping there would be colour images elsewhere in the book - as well but there isn't.

Buy it - if you have no other choice.

3.0 out of 5 stars pretty much up to date but tooooo brief, 18 Sep 2009

But keep an eye out on thorntree forum for updates.

The trekking section was too brief, not detailed enough! in fact it was pretty crap! get the (outdated and out of print ((I think))) Karakoram and Hindu Kush book for more detail.

And there were no colour photos within the book! (bar a small selection near the contents page)

Also, the book lacked that extra bit of detail, its far too brief, and doesn't try more to give a better understanding of terrain, journey times, things to do, among other things.

Wasn't as good as previous versions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good guide book, 14 Sep 2009
Relevant content.

Wide research works in reality. Be aware of the current security situation which is different to when the title was published.
