"Pakeezah" (1971)is a 125 minutes long Indian classic melodrama, directed by Kamal Amrohi and starring his wife - Meena Kumari in the main role.
The story is set in the North of India and is about the beautiful Muslim dancer Nargis who fells in love with one of her clients - a rich man Shahabuddin (Ashok Kumar). Shahabuddin takes Nargis out of the brothel and marries her but his family refuses to accept her and she runs away into the local cemetery where eventually she dies giving birth to Shahabuddin's child - a girl who will later become a dancer called Pakeezah.
The movie is about the beauty and wonderfulness of Pakeezah and the young man Salim (Raj Kumar) who fells in love with her by accidentally meeting her in a train.
The movie is full of symbols, Urdu poetry, elegance of Uttar Pradesh feudal elite, wonderful photography, beautiful music and romantic scenes. It has six famous songs like "Inhi Logone le Leena", "Thade Radhiyo", "Chalte Chalte Yuhin Koi", "Mausam Hai Aashiqana", "Chalo Dildar Chalo", "Aaj Hum Apni". Music is written by Ghulam Mohammed. The Meena Kumari heroine is young (17 years old), beautiful and tragic. In "Pakeezah", coincidental meetings, paradoxical family ties and the role of destiny acts as a moral.
The movie has been nominated for the Filmfare Awards (1973) in the categories for the Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Music. It has won an award for the Best Art Direction (N.B. Kulkarni) and the movie has been called as the best ever in Bollywood, a masterpiece, cultic, classical and the titan of the Indian cinema. It has been filmed for 14 years and the main actress Meena Kumari died shortly after the film was released. Touching and unforgettable.
