When Churchill's career [occasionally] faltered, the great man turned to painting, a pastime that allowed him to recharge and reset for yet another phase of achievement. I found this to be a lifestyle tip as valid today as it was to a century ago. Momentary escapism such as is attained through art can allow for ones primary occupation to flourish (something we could all do well to consider). It is also refreshing to read a book, by Churchill, that isn't overtly military or political in tone. I bought this for my uncle; anyone can profit and relate to the themes in the book. Very quotable, and very reassuring - if ever I am in doubt about my direction, I may just pick up the book again...hopefully I could write something similar one day! Ideal for anyone who has had a bit of a setback lately. You can practically smell the reassuring scents of cigar smoke mingled with turpentine and linseed oil. I also imagine that he spilled the odd bit of whiskey over his first draft, causing the fountain pen ink to run - so we're pretty lucky it got finished.

N.B. HEALTH WARNING - reading this book MAY incite ambitions of political and business greatness and leadership.

As well as being a joy to read, this Penguin(1964) book is a pleasure to hold.
Churchill's words inform, inspire, comfort and excite in equal measure. The quality of the reproductions of a few of his paintings complement the content beautifully.

To read his English is a joy. Few of our present authors have the skill of 'Less words mean more' and yet it flows seamlessly. As an artist I have been where he has been and know the joy of painting , the relaxation it brings and the deep satisfaction of getting it (Well) nearly right - But just wait 'til the next one.
A must read for any budding artist; anyone who enjoys good English produced by a Master wordsmith.

I was delighted to receive my book -- Painting as a Pastime -- in such beautiful condition! It was advertised as "acceptable" -- but was actually in very fine shape! Thanks so very much!

Really lovely little book, bought as a gift. However, be aware it is a little book, which did not matter to me or recipient but some may be disappointed with the small size.

It was a lovely book but very short and I was disappointed that there were no pictures of his paintings, neverthe less an enjoyable read. RGG

For my husband. Good as far as it goes, but considering the title spoke as 'Painting as a Pastime' - Not one picture?

As an Artist myself and a lifelong admirer of our own English super-hero,(Churchill),I wanted to check out his 'artistic' side.
This little book does the job nicely.--What a man!
Born in 1944,I will always be grateful that he was in charge in WW2 and to think that we shared a love of Art just makes me feel good.
That's my review- 'hope you like it!
