I adore wildlife art books, so was really looking forward to getting this one. It is a lovely book, filled with great pictures, but sadly follows the all to familiar step by step approach. I would liked to have had more writing and thoughts from the artists about his thoughts and working process rather than paintings to copy. This seems to be the way all art books are written today, and they are great for beginners, but not so great for those who want to push their art forward. That said the book is good value and I am glad I was able to add it to my collection.

Finally 20 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
Finally a book by an (ex)Disney artist showing his techniques. While this is about realistic Wildlife art, one can't help but notice the romanticised use of atmosphere and colour, trademark of the animation industry. The step-by-steps are not too involved and give a wide range of settings and various animals. Highly inspirational. Very glad the book is in my 'toolbox', will be going back to it again and again.

Not bad but.. 24 July 2011

Format:Paperback
I agree with julie. If you are starting out to paint wildlife this would be a very useful book to own. the demonstrations are easy to understand and the blocking in technique is a good way to start. The paintings at the beginning of the book are very good. These are clearly work he has done to the best of his own ability and are atmospheric and inspiring. Unfortunately the demonsrations are a very mixed bag. Some like the giraffe and the tiger are superb. others though look as though the artist has rather lost interest with what he is doing. To me the demos of, for example, the wolf and polar bears were no where near the standard of the work at the front of the book and I felt I was being "painted down" to. I had hoped for a book showing something beyond the basics, of the thinking behind the choices, not "use this brush and this colour" and just copying. If you are looking for a "how to get started" book this will do nicely. If you are already painting and want to improve to the next level then this book is probably not what you want.
