Product Description

Not many bands get to make it this far so it s to be hugely applauded that Ocean Colour Scene release their landmark 10th studio album February 11th. Entitled Painting this collection of 14 new songs is released on Cooking Vinyl Records and was recorded over five weeks at Vada Studios in Warwickshire with produer Matt Terry. It s a sonic splash of colour reflecting eclectic influences ranging from Bert Jansch and Burning Spear to Bacharach and David. The album is a representation of all that is great about British rock; anthems, heartfelt ballads and weird, left-of-middle psychedelic wig-outs. Quite simply, Painting is another great record from British pop s most under-rated storytellers. As artistic statements go, it might just be their masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ocean Colour Scene at the top of their game 25 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm bemused by some of the lukewarm and negative reviews for this album. What do people expect from Ocean Colour Scene? If you're a long-time fan, I fail to see how you'd be in any way disappointed by "Painting", as it's simply a fantastic album of new Simon Fowler and Steve Cradock-penned Ocean Colour Scene songs. A brilliant collection of quality, classic ballads and rockers with a healthy dose of psychedelia added for good measure. It's a massive insult to the band to describe this excellent new album as "more of the same", because the compositions are rich, enjoyable and original. If you wanted them to go all Weller, pushing the boundaries, experimenting with making a massive nearly unlistenable electronic noise and, in the meantime, alienating a huge section of their fanbase whilst doing so, you're going to be disappointed. If you're waiting for them to re-write "Moseley Shoals" note-for-note again so you can re-live your youth, you're going to be somewhat crestfallen. It is, however, a terrific piece of work and a pleasure to listen to from start to finish, not a bad track on it.

Highlights of "Painting" are the powerful, angry "If God Made Everyone" (one of the best songs Ocean Colour Scene have ever written), the catchy "Doodle Book" (love the guitar licks), the excellent opener "We Don't Look In The Mirror" (a perfect, anthem to kick the album off), "Painting" itself (which does actually sound as if could be a "Moseley Shoals" album track) and "The Union", resplendent with a dreamy, blissed-out chorus. Simply put, if you don't like this album then you don't like Ocean Colour Scene, because "Painting" is the sound of them doing what they do best - writing and performing bloody fantastic songs. There certainly are a handful tracks here which would make it onto an OCS "best of" and I can say, without doubt, that I will still be listening to this one in years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Class is permanent 13 Feb 2013

22 yrs as a band, 10 studio albums, hundreds of live shows, its time everyone actually stood up and applauded OCS. No fancy 'reunions' just solid songwriting and touring for over 20 yrs. OCS have delivered another brilliant collection of songs, foot stompers, ballads, a couple of short acoustic tracks and a bit of psychedelic jamming. Ths is a great album, Simon's voice beautiful as always and Steve delivers some incredible guitar playing. Stand out tracks, winning side, painting, doodle book, i dont want to leave england and the amazing if god made everyone. Keep the faith!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Integrity 2 Mar 2013
By Glenn TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Not surprisingly for me, Ocean Colour Scene's continued reliance on being influenced from the past appeals strongly, and, for example, the NME's rating of 6/10 for this latest release and a criticism of that tendency endorses both their musical predispositions as well as mine.

All the tracks pretty much demonstrate their strong 60s affiliations, and a significant nod to the Beatles in harmonies and arrangements. Seventh 'Professor Perplexity' reflects this well both in its title and the use of basic echo effects in the song; opener 'We Don't Look in the Mirror', with the recorded voices of children at its start, is firmly planted in a mid to late 60s garden where Moody Blues flowers abound with their sweet fragrances. One of the stronger emotive songs is 'If God Made Everyone', starting acoustically to rise into a Whoesque/Daltry shout, the rhetorical angst aimed very contemporarily at Norwegian Simon Behring Breivik and his killing spree. A naive question certainly, but no less poignant for the asking. Tenth 'A Winning Side' continues the earnest protest with a mother's lament for her dead soldier son's wasted life in war, presumably Afghanistan but universal both in its sentiment and that continued 60s/70s naivety which is only made so because such a question needs to be asked after all these years.

So, `earnest' both in its lyrical concerns as well as homage to a musical past, this won't therefore appeal to those searching for a new direction, but it is genuine enough as a tenth album from a band surviving firmly beyond their Britpop years with integrity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Painting - another OCS masterpiece 22 Feb 2013
By Blank
Format:Audio CD
A real top quality album with a great collection of songs and sounds - rockers, acoustics, ballads, and some very enjoyable psychedelia added to the mix. The album flows along smoothly from start to finish with excellent musicianship and absolutely sublime vocals throughout. There are the usual Beatle-esque/Lennon-esque moments, which to me is always a big plus.
Highly recommended - sheer class. (P.S you can buy an extra track from Itunes as well)

Massive Ocean Colour Scene fan but they really should stop releasing new music! There are occasional nice touches but it's far too bland to listen to all the way through.
