Product Description

Product Description

In this attractive book Richard Taylor, best known for his superb watercolours of buildings, provides a practical guide to painting your house and garden in watercolour.

Painting your home and garden is very popular among amateur painters, reflecting the continuing interest in these subjects on television and in the media. It is an ideal subject for the artist, being literally on the doorstep, with the added bonus of the resulting paintings having a very personal quality.

Richard starts by explaining the practical aspects of painting – exploring colour and texture, using a sketchbook, and getting to grips with perspective and composition – and then he looks at a wide variety of houses, from town dwellings to country cottages, as well as some of the smaller details and architectural features that can provide such interest.

He then moves on from the house, through the conservatory and out into the garden, where numerous interesting subjects can be found, such as wooden sheds, old stone walls and terracotta pots, not to mention the flowers and vegetables.

With sketches, step-by-step sequences, staged demonstrations and Richard’s evocative watercolours to inspire and encourage, this book provides an ideal introduction to this fascinating subject.

This book differs from Taylor's earlier "Painting Buildings in Watercolor" in that it focuses more on residential and domestic properties both in the UK and even the USA. I have used it extensively in my own work painting house portraits. Taylor offers practical advice on setting up your composition, viewpoint, deciding how much to leave out or include, and even framing presentation. I have never seen another book quite like this one. I personally enjoy his friendly, encouraging style and practical suggestions about not intruding on others' privacy. I have read hundreds of art books, but Richard Taylor's are among the few in my permanent collection!--Christina Moret, NC, USA

Good examples on colors 25 Jan 2012
By Ralph Freeman - Published on Amazon.com
I don't care for his very loose style but the very good examples on color mixing makes it worthwhile. (I am still a beginner so keep this in mind.)
