Product Description

Product Description

In the Grand Canyon and on the icy flanks of Mount Everest, deep in rainforests and deserts, under water and at the mouths of live volcanoes Tony Foster paints his expansive watercolours at the edges of the world. Presented here with personal accounts of his journeys, they are an exultant testament to the power of art and the richness and fragility of our planet. His meticulously executed watercolours demonstrate his complete mastery of the centuries-old tradition of English landscape painting. For Foster each work is a page in a visual diary, a richly pictorial chronicle of events and encounters along the way which constitutes both journey and destination. In his composite images, maps and diagrams, together with details of flora and fauna, contextualize the principal subjects. The packets of seeds, like the pouches of volcanic dust, combine similarly the narrative of particular journeys with different time scales and forces of nature. Tony Foster has succeeded in seeing, and conveying by means of the most subtle of visual metaphors, eternity in a grain of sand .

Format:Hardcover
This is an art book which is readable.
Tony Foster has been travelling into the world's wildernesses for the past 25 years in order to make his monumental paintings, often under extreme and demanding conditions.
This is a magnificent book of breathtaking and inspiring watercolours and Tony's capacity to tell a tale in his accompanying diaries, together with contributions from some of his fellow travellers, adds an extra depth to those images.
This is the first comprehensive retrospective volume of Tony Foster's work and it is of great interest to not only artists and art hsitorians but also to geologists, seismologists, climatologists and environmentalists.

A book to treasure. 5 Oct 2009
By V. Edge
Format:Hardcover
This book, containing watercolour lanscapes, has to be one of the best ever produced. The reproduction of the fabulous paintings is excellent and the text adds even more interest and information. It's a book to keep by your side and refer to again and again for inspiration.

Tony Foster is a first class artist, and the top quality reproductions of his work make this a book to treasure. For me, the text was utterly fascinating, and the stories of how the locations were reached, and the sometimes almost incredible difficulties which had to be overcome in the process, really brought the whole thing alive. In some ways this is an illustrated adventure story, rather than a collection of paintings, but however you view it, it is a cracking book.
