I'm finding this book an extremely useful supplement to oil painting classes. It really tells you everything you could possibly want to know about using oil paints such as what they're made from, drying times, painting mediums, health and safety issues, building up a painting and looking after your equipment. It starts you off with painting still lives, then covers landscape painting, including a guide to creating a painting en plein air, and then has a couple of chapters on painting portraits and figures. It ends with some chapters on more creative ways to use colour and paint, as well as suggestions of artists to study. This is not a beautiful book, but it is the most comprehensive introduction to oil painting I have found, and I like the "can do" style of the writing.

Quite a thick book. 13 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
This thicker book looks very promising. However, I find it unnecessarily wordy which - as an artist of many years standing - I found irritating.
I haven't used oils before, which is the reason I purchased it, and it looks as if it will give what I require of it.
However, I hadn't realised it was to be posted from Canada which, clearly, meant a long wait for delivery.
