This is a brilliant DVD for really explaining how Painter 11 works. John Derry is a very professional and very clear tutor. He gives well-structured information and advice in a very palatable form, sparked by humour, and by very honest appraisal of the facilities of Painter and how to get the best out of them. Painter is so powerful, it is easy to become either overwhelmed or bogged down by all the possibilities. John takes you by the hand, shows you how to tweak it to suit what you want to do, and gives examples and exercises for practice. He is very thorough, with a light touch - never boring.
To begin with, I had a glitch with the DVD. It kept `sticking' - as if it was online, with a slow connection. I emailed lynda and within two hours (on Sunday night!), they had replied and the problem was solved. If you have the same problem: in QuickTime go to Quick Time Preferences > Advanced > select GDI Safemode and apply.
The other problem I've had was inspired by seeing John set up the Cintiq as a virtual artist's paint palette in dual screen, toggling the cursor between the screens. I wondered why he didn't say how to do it! I ended up with two cursors on my laptop screen, and all the control windows on the Cintiq, and no cursor to control them with! Do check all your manuals and settings. I found that my problem was just one single setting in the `display toggle' preferences - from `desktop and Cintiq', to `other monitors and Cintiq' - and bingo, problem solved.
If you've got Painter 11 and you don't feel you're on top of it yet, (or an earlier version, but are wondering whether to upgrade), you will find this DVD really useful. It says Essential Training and it is!
