Product Description

Spenser is approached by Ashton Prince, an art professor who wants him to help recover a stolen painting. The thieves will return the painting in exchange for a ransom, and so the professor wants Spenser along in case things turn nasty. The exchange goes seemingly without a hitch, but as Prince emerges carrying a rectangular object wrapped in brown paper and heads for the private detective's car, the package explodes and makes a dreadful mess of the hapless prof. Spenser isn't going to let anyone get away with killing one of his clients, but first he's got to figure out who did it and why. Turns out that Professor Prince was giving extra tuition to his pretty young female students - and not just of the academic kind. But why go to such elaborate lengths to murder him? And is the painting still out there? Soon Spenser will find that powerful men have their own reasons to suppress the answers to such questions - and they will think nothing of silencing a prying detective.

From the Inside Flap

Private Detective Spenser is on his easiest job yet. Art professor Ashton Prince has hired him to help recover a stolen painting. The thieves will return it in exchange for a ransom. All Spenser has to do is accompany Prince, just in case. And collect his fee. But, as Prince walks away from the exchange towards Spenser's car carrying the wrapped painting, it explodes. Prince is gone, and with him, Spenser's cash. Starting to investigate, Spenser discovers Prince's past is far from squeaky clean, but nothing warrants going to such unusual lengths to kill him. Who did it, and why?

There's another one coming, before Spenser retires for good, and it's Sixkill (Spenser Mystery). And that's it, unfortunately.
I've been a Spenser aficionado since the very beginning: I've read them all, I've enjoyed them all.
But all good things come to an end, and I truly mourn the passing of Rober B. Parker - one of the best, within this genre.

For a complete list of all Spenser titles, check the author's Amazon page, but here are a few of his latest: The Professional: A Spenser Novel: A Spenser Mystery, Rough Weather: A Spenser Novel, A Triple Shot of Spenser (Spenser Mysteries), etc.

I'll miss him dearly.

I put off reading this for months but finally needed my Spenser fix. Read it in 1 day.

Better than the last few and signs the series was back on the up - such a shame that there is only one final story to read.

I may have to start from the beginning and enjoy them all again.

Great stuff... 16 Jan 2011

News of Parker's death was a real shock, so opening "Painted Ladies" I was sad to think I was about to read one of his last. I love reading Parker's books, he just hits a groove with his characters and knows how to ride it out brilliantly. Being with Spencer is like hooking up with an old friend, and even average Spencer novels are entertaining.

Rest assured, the only disappointment here is that Hawk isn't along for the ride. If you enjoy Parker, you'll enjoy "Painted Ladies". It's got a good solid plot, plenty of action and all the usual wisecracks. It's a worthy inclusion to the Spencer cannon.

I've read other reviews here where people suggest Parker didn't finish this book, and that someone else did. Sorry, I have to say, I don't agree with that at all.

not a classic, but not bad
In this book, spenser fails right at the beginning, and the rest of the book is about his search for the truth, even though no-one really wants him to. Read more

Great
I thoroughly enjoyed this Parker book, so far I think I have read about 20 of his books and can honestly say that I have enjoyed them all.

It's nearly the end!
This is the penultimate Spenser novel, the thought makes me weep! And as usual the clever witty spare writing of Robert Parker sparkles. Read more
