A brilliant, eclectic album, which warrants as the best new album I've heard since Apple,Venus by XTC and that came out nearly twenty years ago! I won't labour a track by track review, but would rather sum it up by saying it is THE great West Coast album, that never wads and by that I don't wish to brand The Painted Caravan as some sort of retro re-hash, struggling to create a shattered dream. As far as I can tell there is no active attempt to slavishly copy any of the great artistes of West Coast Rock like Jefferson Airplane or It's a Beautiful Day, it is just obvious that the West Coast ethos has influenced Peter Ulrich substantially and he has paid his tribute by producing a record that will stand shoulder to shoulder with the best that period could throw up. To refine that view, there are elements of The Painted Caravan which are reminiscent of some of the British groups who hitched their wagon to the West Coast horses, like The Incredible String Band and again it would easily rank with the best they had to offer. I cannot sing the praises of this album enough, it should win every award going, but it probably won't, more's the shame. Please give it a chance and pick up one of the extremely cheap copies to be had on Amazon and if you like it spread the word, because this is a record that demands to be heard!
