Product Description

Amazon Review

From the beginning of Paint Shop Pro 6 Visual Insight, the authors tell us to "dive right in, push every button". This hands-on approach works particularly well in the unimposing interface of Paint Shop Pro, an alternative to more complex, and more expensive, paint applications like Photoshop.

Overview explanations of important concepts, like "The Basics of Masking", alternate with step-by-step walk-throughs of essential tasks, like "Creating a Layered Image" or "Using Vector Text". The book ushers readers through all the features and techniques, starting with basic tools, many of which are similar to counterparts in other paint programs. Next, readers work with selections, colours, layers, masks, filters and effects.

The book contains an introduction to Web graphics and animated GIFs using an animation wizard within the software as well as a primer vector graphics, a new capability in version 6. The book also acquaints readers with the picture frame wizard, the process of creating custom frames, and Paint Shop Pro's Picture Tubes--tools which allow users to paint with images.

The second half of the book contains projects that put the previous lessons to work, from creating a jigsaw puzzle out of an image to compositing graphics, creating text effects, and making an animated banner ad. The layout of the book is clear, with many illustrations, screen shots, and a full colour section. With a straightforward writing style, and a patient flow of information and instruction, Paint Shop Pro 6 Visual Insight will enable non-professional desktop publishers and Web site authors to create some flashier graphics without stumbling up the steep learning curve experienced with other software. --Angelynn Grant, amazon.com

Topics covered: Basic instruction in Paint Shop Pro 6 including how to use tools, menus and palettes, work with selections, colour, layers, masks, filters and effects; how to create Web graphics and animations, work with vector graphics, create picture frames and picture tubes. Projects cover working with layers, photo restoration, text effects, popular types of web animations and embedding a digital watermark.

As the world's greatest 'Non Artist', any graphical book would have to be extremely good to teach me. This is just such a book.
Assuming very little knowledge of Paint Shop, the first part of the book starts at the very basics by going through each of the available tools contained in PSP.
Using a semi -tutorial / semi-information session approach, you will soon find yourself familiar with everything from drawing lines & typing text through masks, tubes & layers. (You will even learn Animation Shop!)
The second part of the book contains many different projects for you to try. Each project revises & builds on the material taught in the first part of the book. They are quite involved; but easy to follow.
By the end of the book, you will feel an accomplished paint shop pro user ~ without having been pushed too far during the learning experience.
Nothing is perfect, however, & this book has a minor flaw. Both parts of the book rely upon you having to hand a collection of images to work with. While this may at first not seem to be much of a problem, you may find that certain functions within PSP won't work with the exercies due to incorrect colour dept etc. Again, while this is fairly easy to sort, unless you know what's wrong, you may get frustrated.
To solve the problem, it would have been good if the authors could have provided a set of images on a CD-Rom. Perhaps some starting images along with 'answers' to each project.
In summary, an easily readable yet thorough book which everyone from Picasso down to me will benefit from. It's great value as well.

Being new to PSP, I was looking for a book that presented more on the hands on approach. Unfortunately this book did not come up with the goods. The author, in my opinion leaves you wanting, in each section, and I was looking for more than was presented.
Had I known at the time of the availability of numerous tutorials on this package, I would have made them my first visit, as I have learned more from them than this book could ever hope to offer.

You won't regret this book or the Power book, If found both to be very helpful. This one is more basic, with tons of hands on examples Very easy to learn and really shows you the power of the program including animations, collages, layers, make a puzzle, picture frames and lots more! Fully illustrated.

Wonderful... 9 Mar. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Once I got Paint Shop Pro 6, I was excited but a bit frightened about the complexity of the program. My previous artistic/graphics experience consisited of art class in high school. I didn't know what a mask or a raster layer (or much else) was. Visual Insight explained everything I needed in simple terms with appropriate illustrations. It is a great book for beginners. The projects at the second half of the book helped me to see what this program is capable of. After going through this book, I am now able to create the graphics that I need.

Very Good Book! 24 Jan. 2000
By Dianne Miles - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Being somewhat new to the Paint Shop Pro family I now realized that there's life after PhotoShop. This book is wonderful! With each project, the authors takes you through them step-by-step. I also purchased the PSP 6 POWER! by Lori J. Davis. You will not regret purchasing this book.

Great Book 15 Dec. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I purchase many boooks and never read them, or I start and never finish. I read this one cover to cover. The examples are great. I was able to make everything demonstrated in this book. I learned all those advanced features I was wanting to learn. When I buy a manual for a computer program this is what I am looking for... I am keeping my eyes open for more books by these two authors... I have ever paint shop pro manual listed with amazon.com
