JASC Paint Shop Pro 9Digital Camera Noise Removal Filter scans photos and removes image noise while intelligently preserving image textures.
Customise noise removal by defining specific regions or colour ranges, then save results to presets for later use with photos from the same camera.
Chromatic Aberration Removal Filter eliminates the coloured glow that often appears in high-contrast areas of digital photographs.

I've been working my way through free trials of various photo editors, and I managed to time it that I got 60 days out of PSP8 and another 60 with PSP9, so I suppose that having four months to play with this software has made its use almost second nature to me.
Adobe Photoshop CS may well be THE industry standard for this type of software, but you're looking at a large cash outlay (around £500) and a very steep learning curve in order to master it. Photoshop Elements is in the same price range as PSP9, but many of the functions available in CS are cut down or totally missing from Elements, and I've found that PSP9 out performs it in almost every respect. The noise removal tool makes seperate noise removal software redundant and the chromatic aberation tool works wonders on the purple fringing you get when you're shooting into a bright light. The user interface is easily customisable, which means you can reach the functions you want quickly when you need them.
If you're looking for a powerful image editor that's easy to use and intuitive, then you can't do much better than PSP9.

I started using (the then shareware) Paintshop Pro (version 2?) way back in the 1980's. In those early days its' file format conversion and browse facilities were simply unrivalled.
As time went on, and my photographic needs became more sophisticated and ambitious I kept being told that I should migrate to Photoshop. I did this several times, but have always returned to what seems an equally versatile but more intuitive and easily learned product.
Most recently I invested in Photoshop CS instead of upgrading from Paintshop Pro 8. Yet again, I have reversed the decision and forsaken Photoshop for Paintshop Pro 9. I fail to see any relative deficiency in the product. Maybe it is because I learned Paintshop Pro first that I find it so much easier; but I do beleive it to be the superior programme. Working methods may differ, but the many features of PSP including masks, layers and plug-ins really do offer the same range of creative options. As it is so much less expensive than its' rival, and does not require an irksome product activation procedure - it seems surprising that more educational institutions do not adopt it as standard. It would be good to see more high quality books describing and inspiring the use of Paintshop Pro. I am very happy with the programme and see no value in spending considerably more just for the satisfaction of using the "industry standard".

This is a cracking price for a great piece of software, but (at the time of writing) Corel itself is selling the full version of Paint Shop Pro v10 for just £12 more - £42.
This might be just a limited offer, but it's certainly worth checking out before you buy this version.
