Product Description Review

Paintshop Pro is one of the most popular image editing packages in the world, due in large part to its magical combination of low price with powerful features. Paintshop Pro is a fully featured digital darkroom in the same mould as Adobe Photoshop. This special 10th-anniversary edition of Paint Shop Pro is filled with free software, filters and images, including Jasc Media Center Plus 3.1, Flaming Pear Virtual Painter and Alien Skin Eye Candy .

Version 7 adds a raft of new features for retouching digital images, creating business graphics and producing interactive Web graphics. Paintshop Pro's vector shapes--introduced in version 6--have been enhanced and now support gradients, textures and patterns on stroke and fill commands. New image-editing features include auto-enhance, which adjusts colour balance, brightness, saturation and hue to improve picture quality with a single click. New filters for noise, scratch and dust removal, together with automatic red-eye removal make picture restoration easier than ever.

You don't need a separate vector application to create business graphics--Paintshop Pro's enhanced vector drawing tools provide everything you need. New align, distribute, arrange, group and resize commands, and snap to grids and guides makes for quick and accurate positioning of graphic elements. And there are over 20 new artistic and lighting special effects to experiment with.

Web masters will appreciate Paintshop Pro's new Web features which include image slicing, image maps, JavaScript rollovers and file optimisation with browser preview. As usual, JASC's excelent Animation Shop 3 is included with which you can create gif animations from layer-based Paintshop Pro images. Productivity and ease of use enhancements and a new "getting started" guide all go to make this one of the best value power packages for image editing. --Ken McMahon --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The title includes Jasc Media Center Plus 3.1: The easy way to file and find your photos, clip art, scanned images, and Web graphics on your hard drive, CD-ROMs, or Zip disks. Flaming Pear lets you infuse your graphics with two texture-generating effects--lacquer and swerve. Hundreds of presets with graphic previews will have you making eye-catching text, Web buttons, and more. You'll also be able to design cool animations with Animation Shop 3. Also, Alien Skin Eye Candy will add life to your graphics with 21 special effects. The application saves you time with its productivity tools, including grids, guides, alignment, and grouping.

I've used versions 4,5,6 & 7 of Paint Shop Pro & aside from the minor bugs that you get with any new version of a program my only real criticism of this program to date has been its lack of new-user-friendliness.
Version (7.04) 'The Tenth Anniversary Edition' finally offers users a truly excellent step by step interactive program guide that makes learning most of PSP's functions very simple indeed. I've always used a number of Adobe programs including Photo Shop 6.2, Photo Deluxe 4 & Photo Shop Elements 1.01 & now feel that Paint Shop Pro is finally coming of age & stealing the march on Adobe's graphics/photo manipulation software - which, although good, comes at a price.
My advice to anyone seeking a truly excellent graphics/photo manipulation package for use at home is to look no further than Paint Shop Pro 7.04, because not only is it a polished, bug free product, it's also extremely feature rich & easy to use. The Tenth Anniversary Edition of this software comes with three truly useful (& hefty) program guides that eliminate the need to buy additional companion books - something you don't get with Adobe products. You also get a number of excellent add on programs that would normally set you back the cost of this program by themselves.
The Tenth Anniversary Edition of Paint Shop Pro is a bargain... Buy it - you will not be disappointed.

The main reason for buying Paint Shop Pro is that it's the only package of its kind with decent support for printing pictures.
Other programs (Photoshop LE, for example) give you no control over the position of the printed image and omit the wonderful 'size to fit page' option.

Reading through the other reviews for this software, the general impression is that users are satisfied, I would not disagree, but would add the following points. Firstly, although this is one of the easier programs to use, it still is reasonably complicated to begin with. The hard copy manuals are definitely an advantage but I felt that they could have been written better and users will need them open while working. It's probably as well to try out the 'Getting started' guide in full before doing anything serious. All of the advertised 'extra' software is not all what it seems, a lot of the add ons are only demo versions requiring further purchases, and this is also true for the watermarking feature, you need to subscribe to a rather pricey watermarking service in order to use this part of the software, have a look at your printer utilities software, some printers offer watermarking, like the one I use, Epson Stylus C42UX, no need to pay extra for it either! After overcoming the sometimes quirky and illogical way the program works, it is very capable software giving good all round results, a worthwhile point to note is that it is equipped with an enormous amount of filters for importing/exporting files in just about every format. Packaged with PSP 7.0 you also get Animation Shop 3, very interesting for GIF editing/creating, although I haven't experimented a great deal with that side. There is support for a large number of digital cameras, but typically not for mine! There is a way round it though so it's still useable. Bear in mind that the end result from any picture editing program is proportional to your own effort and abilities and how much time you are prepared to spend sat in front of the monitor. In general I think it's worth buying, if you are prepared to take time to read the books, like everything else, there are better programs, but at what price?

As a graphics professional working cross-platform to produce professional imagery for world class companies I use a range of professional software, cost being no object. However I still continue to include PaintShop Pro in my suite of applications simply because it performs some functions better than it's more expensive counterparts. In it's latest incarnation Paint Shop Pro has added the necessary features to afford it a place amoungst the big boys as a serious contender on functional credibility alone. Coupled with it's competitive pricing, down to less than a fifth of some of it's competing products, I would recommend PaintShop Pro as the package of choice for the home user and a useful addition to the professional's software armoury. The only reason I have not given it 5 stars is that it hasn't yet achieved the overall complete level of sophistication that Adobe Photoshop sets as the industry standard package, but then that's why it costs five times as much and note I did say 'yet'.

PSP in it's lastest incarnation is packed to the rafters with features. Not only do you get Paint Shop Pro an excellent program for correcting red eye, making colour adjustments to your faded treasured photos and preparing graphics for optimum performance on your web pages, it also comes with Media Center and Animation Shop 3 so you can create simple but easy to make animations for web pages or simply just for fun.
The good thing about PSP is because it is such a good program for so little money compared to other available programs on the market, it has a huge user base and therefore there are literally hundreds of tutorials on the web and books avaliable to help you get the most from this versatile product.
The only reason that I have given it four stars instead of the maximum five is because to get the most from this program you really need to spend a lot of time getting to know it's more complicated features, but if you have the patience I heartily recommend this program.
