Product Description

Product Description

J.M.W. Turner was one of the greatest artists Britain has ever produced. His watercolours, with their extraordinary effects of shifting light and dramatic cloudscapes, are especially highly regarded. For the first time, this book reveals the secrets of his technique, allowing present-day watercolourists to try them out themselves. There is an accessible introduction that explores Turner's life and career and the materials he used to achieve the masterpieces we know and love today. The book then goes on to list the modern materials the twenty-first century watercolourist will need if they aspire to take on similar subject matter. Successive chapters look at a particular theme, such as Sky, Water, Trees, Buildings, People, Animals, Sunrise, Moonlight and Fire, illustrating each with one of Turner's works. Expert contemporary watercolour artists then explain, step by step, how to paint a version of that particular picture and how to use the techniques learnt to paint other compositions. With a glossary of technical terms, high quality colour reproductions and backed by the authority of Tate, the world centre for Turner scholarship, this is a must-buy purchase for all lovers of JMW Turner and of watercolour painting.

This is fun 27 Aug 2010
By GaryD
Format:Paperback
I am am fairly new to watercolours and have been trying to find my own style. I have always loved Turner and came across this book and thought lets give it a go. The exercises in the book are very well illustrated and easy to follow but more importantly they are great fun, especially if you enjoy a bit of finger painting! I think I learnt more from this book than I did at a local evening class, having said that this book is not going to help you produce twee chocolate box watercolours. I am now waiting for the Tate to hang some of my work.

This is an excellent book that anyone wanting to improve their water colour painting skills, whatever stage of development their work is at ,will find useful.
The step by step lessons are easy to follow. The list of materials needed is not so extensive as to deter anyone starting from scratch.
The history of Turner's life and work is a fascinating read.

Excellent! 15 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a lovely book. It provides detailed step-by-step instructions on how 'to paint like Turner'. Apparently, Turner filled 300 sketchbooks which are nearly all in the Tate Gallery. The historicity of Turner's work is include along with how to paint the sky, storm clouds, water, fire, trees, buildings, people and animals and so on. Turner's techniques and use of colour are greatly detailed by the authors. Advice is provided by some of the world's best watercolour artists and with over 140 pages is of excellent value. The final page of the book contains John Ruskin's quote: 'You cannot look too much at, nor grow too enthusiastically fond of Turner'. Highly recommended.
