The negatives, which are derived from trying to use the book for a purpose other than it's intent (which I discovered after buying it.) :I had hoped that this book would help me choose paint colors for the Georgian house that I am restoring. I wanted pictures of Farrow and Ball paints in interiors. (Their paint colors are really lovely.) While this book is comprised of F&B paints in interiors it is not really a big help in choosing colors. The reason is that majority of the pictures come from old, old houses where they can show early use of the color. This means that many of the colors are applied in very old techniques which, as they very interestingly explain, creates a very different effect. And the colors are mottled with time. Also, the rooms sometimes are so very very different from the "castles" we live in today that it is hard to get a good feel. For example, some of their rooms are so heavily laden with ornamention (cornices, plints, etc.) that it is hard to get a feel for the color in a less broken up state. Finally, some of the colors shown in the book are not available today (e.g. architectural pink) and many of the colors they offer today are not shown in the book.

The positives; It is a beautiful book. It has certainly expanded my willingness to work with color in my Georgian house. The history of their paint colors are interesting. Thus I am glad that I bought it.

A must on your bookshelves. 20 Oct 2004
By Peter Mellon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I thought, Oh another book on color ! But this one completely surprised me. A classic and timeless lay-out of beautiful photographs and truly educating text tailored this book into a must have for anyone interested in decoration.

Obviously the authors know what they're talking about and they mastered their book in a way only the british can do.

I bought that book for all my best friends as a Xmas present and my gift to you is an advice: buy it too !

Looking at Color with Old Eyes 2 Mar 2007
By Suzanne Carty - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I had wanted this book for some time prior to buying it. It is thick, substanital and nicely made. If you love paint, the photographs are lovely. That said, had I had access to this book in a library I would not have bought it. Despite it's size it is a quick read. The most valuable part is the information on various types of paints. This is not a book for someone needing basic color information and inspiration. This is a nice addition to a substantial color library especially for those who love F&B paint.

Paint Geek Tome 11 Sep 2007
By Kevin Orth - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Beautifully printed (Rizzoli) with a wealth of info on historical paints and formulations.....tho not really of interest to the average reader.

Also, caveat emptor, this volume is produced by Farrow & Ball, purveyors of spectacularly expensive paints, and is basically a marketing device for their products.

For a paint geek like myself it is a pleasure, though.
