Product Description

Synopsis

This book will be of special value to secondary school students growing up in families where English is not the first language. Like other titles in Barron's "Painless" series, the approach to learning is informal and user-friendly. The authors take students step-by-step through all parts of speech-nouns, pronouns, verbs, modifiers, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Next they offer advice for improving vocabulary, spelling, emphasizing the importance of active listening, and learning vowel sounds and R sounds, and recognising silent letters and homophones. The book's final three chapters concentrate on written English, advancing from correct punctuation and sentence structure to writing essays and stories. The book's gradual, step-by-step approach makes the mastery of English a truly painless process for students whose first language is other than English.

Most of the chapters in this book are quite comprehensible to English learners who used to cope with stilted and dull English at school. You were very poor at English at school? - Never mind! You still have a lot of opportunities to get ahead if you want to go over what you have learned. I'd like you to master at least Part1 in advance if you are going to English-speaking countries. And why don't you deal with Painless Spelling as well? I'm sure you'll deepen your understanding of English! Your hard work is sure to pay off unless you give up your language skill to the end!
Especially in Chapter 11, the author explains how to cope with the English logic, which you have never learned at school. I must admit that this is the most difficult part in this book. But you can't get your point across to English-speaking people without catching the logic. That's why Painless English for Speakers of Other Languages is indispensable to Non-native speakers of English!

I bought this book for an acquaintance whose first language is Spanish, but who speaks limited English. I returned the book immediately on seeing that the book had much useless and confusing trivia and precious little useful content. It was not even correct on some of the simple grammar it did cover. I was especially annoyed that it relies heavily on the use of websites. Anyone can produce a list of websites. As an example of totally inadequate coverage I could mention the English continuous tenses which are such an important feature of the language. I bought another book through Amazon which is excellent. This book however is a total waste of money.

Useful supplement to ESL reading workbook 1 Oct 2010
By Martha W. Bonney - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
While ESL reading workbooks emphasize vocabulary building, reading comprehension, and word building, this book provides a solid grammar foundation that gives college-bound students what they need to write essays, prepare for college level writing in all their classes. The examples contain information that students will need for the GED--American history, civics, science--rather than wasting time with chitchat, conversations between two imaginary people for example, that are more appropriate in the reading comprehension workbook. My only complaint is about the directions for students to show they understand the topic: single underline this kind of noun, double underline that kind of noun, mark something else some other way--too complicated, sometimes contradictory from topic to topic. Otherwise, a solid text.

English for the ESL Student and Tutor 27 Nov 2009
By R. Shertzer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a volunteer ESL Tutor and retired nurse/social worker I found this book most helpful. The index was of course complete. When I turned to the table of contents, I often found the student's question exactly paraphrased under the chapter heading. The examples and mini quizzes were appropriately supportive. The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation: An Easy-to-Use Guide with Clear Rules, Real-World Examples, and Reproducible Quizzes
