5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing & compelling 31 Dec. 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This tale of a four old girl, her parents and her 'babysitter' draws you through a riveting sequence of events and takes you on a compelling rollercoaster ride. The principal characters are developed well as the story unfolds and it very quickly becomes a gripping read.
After a few chapters, I did a complete double take as it transferred to what appeared to be an entirely different story, this time about a rogue military operation. The two stories are then skilfully brought together becoming an absorbing storyline. It really was a page turner that had me completely engrossed. I don't want to go into any detail of the plot as it will spoil the enjoyment of other readers.
A short quote from the book really does sum it up for me:
'all great stories begin with a bad beginning, before the characters rise from ashes - overcome great odds, endure great tragedy. All leading towards a mercurial rise toward a triumphant end.'
The only exception was it did not have a bad beginning!
I had never come across this author before and later discovered this is the first book he has had published.
I'll certainly look forward to enjoying more of his work in the future.
Try it - you won't regret it!

EDIT, 5th January 2011: - correction to apostrophe (Thank you to reviewer who noticed this error - see comments).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 2 Jan. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I must admit, I only downloaded this book because it was free. I'm glad I did. I started reading it and couldn't stop. The story is great, characters great - not too heavy a read, not too deep that you get lost in the plot.

Hard to place what type of book this is; a bit crime, some thriller, some romance... it had a bit of everything. All in all a very entertaining story and I look forward to more from the same writer - even if I have to pay next time!

2.0 out of 5 stars gave up at 45% 11 Mar. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
I gave this title 2 stars for "I didnt like it" rather than 1 for "I hate it" because despite all the negatives, there are far worse works available on ebook. The idea held promise that was never fulfilled. I was aware of the condition the entire plot hinges on, so from the outset was wondering why Carolyns parents and doctors hadnt figured there was something unusual about her. However I let that go, along with the rather far-fetched character of the child. The totally absurd notion that any parents (let alone two who allowed their child to rule their lives), would consider an unknown single man with no experience the best candidate for a live-in nanny position was more difficult to accept, but again I persevered. Then the book suddenly leapt from "strange little girl" to "political/conspiracy/secret military clap trap" which I basically ignored. It says a lot that skipping those chapters had no effect on the storyline. I felt as though the story was dragging on and checked my progress only to find I as only at 43%! I read a little more, but when the four year olds parents and aunt went home, unconcernedly allowing the child and the "nanny" she had known a few weeks to set off to canada to meet a total stranger, (who also happened to be a trained killer), I decided 45% was as far as I was willing to go. Im pretty good at suspending my belief, but the extremely long winded style finished me off. This was free when I downloaded it and Im glad I didnt pay for it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable 22 Jan. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm afraid that I didn't enjoy this book, and in fact I have finally given up trying to read it after making it to the 36% mark and realising that life was too short to continue. I was encouraged to download it by the premise (which sounded fascinating) and the glowing reviews that this book received, however, I cannot recommend it and even thought it is free I wouldn't download it again.

My main gripe with the book is that both the plot and the characters are unbelievable. In particular the way Carolyn, the almost 4 year old 'princess', speaks is completely wrong for a child of that age. As a result when I'm reading the book every few pages I am 'thrown out' of the book by intense flashes of disbelief and annoyance. The child's speech patterns and level of understanding vacillates wildly between that of a toddler and a 20 year old. I found myself re reading passages to double check who was actually speaking! Unfortunately the plot is also quite unbelievable ie a couple rent out their barn very cheaply (even though they need the money) to a strange man in exchange for him helping to babysit their 4 year old daughter who has just been expelled from school. Within a week he has presided over her injuring herself very badly, it turns out that there is a domestic abuse cloud hanging over him, and despite all this he is going along with the family to private medical consultations ... why, why and why?

I think that there was the potential of a very good book here, however the execution of the plot and the characters have let it down. Not recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars poor read 22 Jan. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I downloaded this book mainly because it was free and had many great reviews. Plot was thin and just didn't excite me like I expected it to. I only finished the book because I thought the story would pick up and there would be an amazing ending.. in fact it was predictable and actually quite boring.
