Product Description

Evil has returned! Demonic powers are manifesting themselves as a myriad of dark creatures, fighting over the fates of imprisoned souls caught in Purgatory. Once again, it is up to Daniel Garner, in the unenviable position of being the Curse of Darkness and the Toy of Light, to fight his way past hordes of demons and fiends.

For that purpose, he has been provided with convincing ""arguments"", such as stakes, rotating saw blades and other useful equipment. Questions remain... ""Can he stop the powerful creatures that stand in his way? Will he ever leave the hell of Purgatory and be reunited with his wife Catherine?""

Painkiller: Hell & Damnation is a fast-paced, thrilling modern remake of an all-action shooter Classic!

Along with the extensive improvements to the graphics and the redesign of the single-player campaign, the game mechanics have been refined and lots of innovations have been introduced:

  • Co-op mode: the entire single-player campaign can be played by two people. The level of difficulty adjusts in accordance with the 2 players (either through the number of enemies or the amount of hit points)
  • Survival mode: in survival mode, up to 8 players battle for survival in a limited area of one map. Endless waves of enemy hordes crash over the brave challengers. A look at the rankings shows who was able to resist the longest.
  • Along with familiar classics such as the Painkiller, the stake gun, the shotgun, and the electrodriver, a new instrument of death has been added to the arsenal: the Soulcatcher, a.k.a. the SSG (Small Sucking Gun); okay, it isn’t small, but it not only shoots saw blades in primary firing mode, but also literally sucks the souls out of countless enemy types in secondary firing. The icing on the cake: enemies hit by the combo attack will fight minions on your side for a short amount of time.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good remake of a great game. 23 Nov 2012
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
One of the many charms of the Painkiller series is the lack of a convoluted storyline, so in honour of that I shall cut to the chase.

The original game was never really more than a stress-buster, and neither is its remake - your character is faced with wave after wave of laughably weak enemies, which you can cut down in various gruesome fashions using an array of powerful weapons. Take down one at a time with the shotgun, or allow a crowd to develop before scattering them to the four winds with a rocket launcher. All disturbingly satisfying.

The AI was never much to write home about, but the levels were stunning and the physics were unique. Fans of the original will be excited to hear that most of the things that made Painkiller such a likeable game have been maintained in its new incarnation.

They may not, however, be so enthused about the choice of levels on offer. The developers have cherry-picked 14 levels from the original Painkiller and its expansion, Battle Out Of Hell. That leaves out a lot of quality and makes the game feel a little short. My personal opinion is that Colosseum (which features in this game) is far too repetitive and far too easy, and should not have been included. Loony Park returns with its infuriating roller-coaster ride, where avoiding enemy fire is impossible. The final boss battle is a little anti-climactic.

Multi-player exists, but there never seems to be anyone around, so I'm unable to review it.

In summary, this is a good remake, but it's nothing mind-blowing. The graphics have been upgraded and some of the levels look wonderful, but the choice and number of levels just feels a bit disappointing.
