This album makes it onto so many "best of" lists and after listening to it it's not hard to tell why.
Whilst some Eric B's beats may not be as revolutionarily fresh as they were back in 1987, they still hold up. The James Brown sampled "I Ain't Know Joke" and title track "Paid in Full" are still as funky as the day they were cut (and, to be fair, I like the synthy sounds of the old-school tracks like "Move The Crowd" and "Eric B is President" anyway).
The main reason to buy this album, though is Rakim's emcee-ing ability. This album shows why he is rightly regarded as the greatest MC of all-time.
This album is the 2-disc platinum edition, meaning you also get the classic Coldcut remix of the title track (one of the best remixes ever, imho).

Unbeatable duo!!!

Back in the days, I was a DJ/MC/Beat Boxer/Popper and I remember it as the most fun time of my life. I was in awe by Rakim's lyrics and couldn't figure out how he had so much creativity to dream up his lyrics, and on top of that, put it into a hardcore yet funky rhyme. I soon boasted Rakim as one of the few, if any, that could hang with Grandmaster Melle Mel during his prime. I shadowed Eric B. because I used to focus on his weak scratching techniques, but soon learned the whole orchestrated composition was his doing. After getting into local Hip-Hop production, I respected his talents by TRYING to "bite his style." It was to no avail. Although I could duplicate the beats and cuts, it definetly didn't have the same soul. Together, Eric B. & Rakim are an "unbeatable duo" and one of the later pioneers of Hip-Hop. eric b and rakim was the ultimate dj,mc combination of old school hip hop.and it shows with this album.you will enjoy this cd if you are new to true hip hop.you will enjoy it even more if you are an old school hip hop fan like me.its a must for true hip hoppers.with songs like "paid in full","eric b is on the cut","my melody",and one of the best hip hop songs ever,"eric b is president".its a double cd.the first one has the original songs and the second cd is pretty much the same songs but they are the remixes.never before heard songs that you will enjoy.these guys without a doubt led the way in the early hip hop years.this cd is very enjoyable and worth every penny....
"Paid In Full"= Hip Hop Heaven

"Paid In Full" is without a doubt in my humble mind the most greatest hip-hop album ever. It's a sure classic with prominent singles such as "Eric B. is President", "My Melody", "I Ain't No Joke" and of course "Paid In Full". The fact that this album was released in 1987 has no bearing on its greatness, this is an album for all time. Rakim has influenced me and inspired me to write rhymes, I hold him in high regard. He's certainly a person who I've idolized. The second disc of this set contains a remarkable remix of "Paid In Full" by Coldcut. This is my most favorite single ever, this remix even outshines the original version which you would think is impossible. "Paid In Full" (seven minutes of madness) is a breathtaking track which has a awe inspiring sample of Ofra Haza's beautiful voice wailing over the "Paid In Full" beat. It's absolutely stunning and so beautiful to hear her voice on this track. There's also some other samples within this track that are so clever especially the one of Rakim echoeing with his booming voice :"PUMP UP THE VOLUME", "PUMP UP THE VOLUME". There's a few dubs on the second disc that are remarkable plus there's Rakim acapella on "I Know You Got Soul" which is dope. Other than these tracks the other remixes don't live up the the originals. If you don't have he original LP of "Paid In Full" certainly pick this up!
