Steven Page is one of the most instantly recognisable voices in Canadian pop history. After parting ways with Barenaked Ladies back in 2009, he now brings out his much anticipated solo album "Page One" - and it does not disappoint.

"Page One" showcases Page's versatility as a songwriter and is largely surprisingly upbeat. First single "Indecision" is a glorious slice of power-pop reminiscent of his old band at their best, while "If You Love Me" is a hugely catchy camp-disco affair. Page's vocals shine on the swing-along "Leave Her Alone", a nod to his previous work with the Art Of Time ensemble.

"Page One" feels familiar yet invigorated - tracks like "A New Shore" and "Marry Me" burst with energy; "Queen Of America" and "Entourage" are experimental but not contrived. Page has branched out into a wider range of genres on this album, yet nothing feels forced.

Lyrically, Page excels on "Page One", and his craft of catchy pop songs with darker undertones is particularly evident on "Over Joy": "My depression has got me choosing doom and gloom over joy".

It remains to be seen how Page will fare in the mainstream market. He has formed a new band for live performances, and you can expect to hear old BNL tunes mixed in with new material at his shows. Surely it won't be long until tracks from "Page One" rank as fan favourites alongside the BNL classics.

Page Without BNL 6 Dec 2010
By Neptune
Format:Audio CD
Okay cards on the table, I liked BNL, a lot. Got all the CD's seen three of the tours so I know what I like as far as BNL goes. What I liked was Stunt, Everything to Everyone, Pirate Ship, Gordon etc, I liked the quirkiness it was what made BNL different.
Steven and the rest of BNL had the "musical differences" divorce, and to be honest are both worse off as a result but and it's a big BUT musically BNL without Steven is bland, still good but bland. Steven without BNL is quirky and fun but maybe missing something somehow.
This album has all the touches that drew me to BNL, the catchy tunes, clever word play in the lyrics the fun that is missing from BNL these days.
I won't review this track by track, you can hear samples for yourself, but if you liked the old 5 piece BNL you'll like this, give it a try you'll thank me later. Given a straight choice - a new BNL album or a new Steven Page Album my pennies will be going into Stevens bank account. Hopefully Page Two is round the corner, keep up the good work Mr Page

I'm a huge BNL fan and although I was sad when Steven Page left, I have to say the fact that he was continuing as a solo artist helped ease the blow, as it's usually his voice and songs that I love the most about BNL albums.
Page One is a great album and the more I hear it, the more I like it! Stand out songs for me are 'A New Shore' and 'Over Joy', but all of the others are great too. I think Page writes some brilliant lyrics and catchy tunes. He also has a beautiful voice and if he had to leave the BNL in order to produce this album, then perhaps that's a good thing?
