What a fascinating book! It extends my knowledge of Christmas origins by far and will appeal to everyone from plantsmen and gardeners to those who follow pagan, wiccan or shamanic pathways who want to celebrate the much older ways. There is so much history here, from the far past up until the present. Did you know Santa Claus as we know him today, has only existed since 1931?? There is folklore about all the traditional Christmas plants, herbs, spices and incense, as well as wonderful recipes and facts that take you from early December through to the end of the Christmas season in January - and how to honour each of the main days. There are stories about Christmas cards, how the traditional pictures came about and what each element originally meant - much will make you giggle and you will be amazed! This is Christmas at its non-commercial best; with the heart put back into the right place...and for those of us who read this magical book; the way Christmases now WILL be.This is a book to truly treasure; one that will stay on my bookshelf a lifetime and one that is a MUST to dip into each year as we enter December, with time to gather together all the intoxicating ingredients for a true Pagan Christmas that will have friends and family talking for years.

This book is fascinating on so many levels from the horticultural angle of christmas, the festival side explaining the reason behind why do certain traditions. A very good read, easy to dip in and out of, a must for the coffee table at christmas time.

I was very disappointed with this book. After reading for a few minutes it became thoroughly boring as it is very disjointed and at times repetative. The style is very heavy going - perhaps something to do with being translated from German. The pictures ae good though. Not a book to curl up with on a dark winter night to have a relaxing read.
