Biography

Over the years, the Pretenders became a vehicle for guitarist/vocalist Chrissie Hynde's songwriting, yet it was a full-fledged band when it was formed in the late '70s. With their initial records, the group crossed the bridge between punk/new wave and Top 40 pop more than any other band, recording a series of hard, spiky singles that were also melodic and immediately accessible. Hynde ... Read more in Amazon's The Pretenders Store

"Criminal", "Let's Make A Pact", "A Real Sense Of Purpose" and "Hold A Candle To This" combine to make this overlooked CD a bona fide gem. This truly does sound like a solo Chrissie Hynde album and fortunately her emotive, tender and forceful vocals suffice and carry the day. The CD is relatively mellow and it's ear candy for me. Chrissie Hynde is one of the greatest rock and roll vocalists ever. Incidentally, "Hold A Candle To This" is the one Pretenders'song that explicitly addresses Chrissie Hynde's longstanding animal rights and humane vegetarianism worldview. It's a riveting tune with great lyrics. "Criminal" is a poignant relationship song that many of us can relate to.

Similar to early Pretenders records ( but lacking the prominent guitar solos and a bit more conventional ) this record clearly demonstrates that Chrissie Hynde was always the creative centre of this band. The band members change , but the sound remains.
On this album Chrissie releases her 'inner Hendrix' on 'May this be love' , rocks out on 'Downtown' ,'No Guarantee' ,'Millionaires' and 'Hold a Candle', revisits her love of reggae on ' How will I miss You' and gives us cool rock/pop on 'Never Do That' ,'Let's make a Pact' , 'Sense of Purpose ', 'When Will I See You ' and , in waltz time , 'Criminal' .
All the songs are strong, as are the performances and playing throughout . It's a shame Chrissie doesn't ever seem to have found a guitarist quite of the calibre of the 'late great' James Honeyman Scott to replace him, but there's some nice guitar work here from Billy Bremner ( not the Leeds footballer I presume !) and this release shows that at least at the time of its release the Pretenders were far from being a spent force.

This album is full of Pretenders richness and magic. Though there are no explosive tracks, the whole album is superbly crafted, full of warm sincerity and never stops bouncing. The music has a very nice sound: the music and singing has a very rare niceness.
Although I love all the Pretenders albums, this one is different because there is no sign of the 'rocker' element. Sometimes it is upsetting when a group does not stick to form but this is a real go-er. I want more of it and more like it, just like I want more syrup tart.

I previously had this on cassette so thought an inexpensive pre-owned CD would be worth a try. The CD was in good condition (as opposed to another Pretenders CD I ordered at the same time). "Packed" has some great and some good tracks with a few I could do without. Overall though it reminded me why I liked The Pretenders.
